Think about your mindset any time you've gone to see a band, especially a local, unknown band. Are you there wanting to see them fail? If they hit a wrong note do you laugh and point at them? No, of course not. You're there to support them and you want them to do well.

Now, realize that everyone in the audience whenever you play feels the same way towards you. Makes it a lot easier.

I once heard a very prominent musician say this about performing live and performing in studio: he said when you play live in front of people, your nerves take away about 40% of your capability, so you are really operating at about 60% of what you are capable of…he also said when the red light comes on and you are recording, you are robbed of 50-60% of your capabilities for the same reason…

His theory was that only the truly great ones are able to squeeze all of their potential out for live or recorded performances…the first time I heard all this I called BS, but then I thought about all the “heroes” that could just kill it in their bedroom or practice space, but then fall completely apart in front of people. Pressure changes things. So maybe?

I am the same way, whether it's playing guitar, singing, or just speaking in front of a crowd...I freeze up... everything I know goes right out the door. And for me, alcohol would only make it worse.

FACTS

This is the most nerve-wracking performance art by FAR. There is no feeling more lonely than bombing on stage at comedy. I would rather strike out in the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, 2 outs, down by one.

think of why you are singing. I'm a slightly above average congregational singer who was asked to join our praise team. That got me through the jittery phase. now it is the asset i rely on.

I don’t agree. I think even the great ones are operating at diminished capacity in the studio. They just practice so much and work so hard to get so good that they sound that great even diminished.

I've only played once on stage in front of a crowd. A band invited me to play a few songs with them and it sounded fun so I accepted. I thought I'd be nervous but somehow I wasn't. I had a blast and would do it again in a heartbeat. I just focused on the music and didn't worry about who was watching.

Now on the other hand, if I'm playing solo for a small group of friends, I'm nervous as hell. There's nobody else to cover up my mistakes.

In my opinion, it’s the crowd that makes the difference. When there’s a huge crowd, you can feed off their energy more than you feel their judgment. That energy helps you have fun and embrace the pressure to make you better.

Playing in front of a small group of people you know is the highest form of pressure.there’s no energy to feed off of. You’re only giving away energy.

That's a great way to put it.
