premieres June 11th on Paramount+
I figured the MB would be interested in this doc.
I definitely got a few songs off Napster.

Uncover the secrets behind the crime we all committed. From executive producers Marshall “Eminem” Mathers, LeBron James, Maverick Carter, Paul Rosenberg and Steve Stoute and produced by Warner Bros. Unscripted Television/Telepictures in association with SpringHill, Interscope Films, and Shady Films, How Music Got Free details the fascinating, and often funny, inside story of the technology-driven disruption that changed music during the late-90s and early-2000s. File-sharing technology, combined with the insatiable demand for new music, created both the means and the motive for millions of young people to participate in outright theft – and be celebrated for it. From New York City, to Los Angeles, to the small factory town of Shelby, North Carolina, the two-part series features the quirky genius of the heretofore-unknown “pirates,” the drama of the FBI investigations and convictions, and the frontline accounts of music’s biggest artists and executives. An unbelievable story of cunning, illegality, celebrity, and innovation, these are the events that changed the music industry forever. Narrated by Method Man, the series features interviews with Eminem, 50 Cent, Timbaland, Jimmy Iovine, Rocsi Diaz, Rhymefest, Steve Stoute and more.

I think illegal file sharing and music downloads cost me about four computers due to viruses.

I can't fricking wait to see this! Napster and music sharing changed my life. My family was fortunate enough to beta test the first broadband cable service in our town back in early 2000. I remember learning how to use Napster, but I had no CD Burner. I got one for my birthday in late 2000, and it was incredible that I was able to download and burn any type of CD I wanted. I think Napster became obsolete some time in late 2000, but other services popped up, like Morpheus, DC++, Soulseek, Kazaa, Limewire, etc. In the mid to late 00's, I was able to easily find whole albums to download from random sites on the internet by just using google.
Spotify made music sharing pretty much obsolete. I do miss the hunt for leaked music, and the thrill of downloading and listening to an album weeks or months before it's official release. But it's too much trouble these days.

If LeBron James' name is associated with it, it'll suck.

shite. I noticed that credit toward the beginning of the video too and winced. Why is he involved?

Psst. P2P was to risky. "Smart" music fans ripped CD's from the local library...

I did that some, but a lot of the time the CD's weren't in very good shape, scratched, which made ripping them not worth doing.
Bit torrent was great back in the day ! It's still around, but better use a good VPN, and make sure your computer is secure !

I think this is what got me too
Hell, there were some songs for the longest time I attributed to someone else because the loop hole of listing it under someone that wasn't suing them
tough to describe how mind blowing it was back then to suddenly have any song you wanted for free

The 2013 documentary Downloaded is probably better account of Napster and what transpired. You can probably watch it on youtube. It's pretty good.
