Bill Monroe's Gibson F5 Mandolin

quote:

Bill Monroe’s Gibson F-5 Master Model mandolin—one of the most renowned and celebrated instruments in the history of bluegrass and country...

When Monroe, now a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and widely known as the Father of Bluegrass, purchased the instrument, it was used and already about twenty years old. He was in Florida in the early 1940s when he spotted it in a barbershop window next to a “For Sale” sign. He bought the mandolin on the spot, case included, for $150. He didn’t know it at the time (but soon learned) that it was a remarkably fortunate purchase.

This particular model of mandolin was designed by famed acoustical engineer and stringed-instrument designer Lloyd Loar, who was the supervising engineer at Gibson from 1919 to 1924. Only about 250 of the F-5 model mandolins were built. They were prized for their superior, balanced tone as well as their strong sound output. The Gibson label, visible through one of the sound holes, certified that the mandolin Monroe bought had been tested and approved by Lloyd Loar on July 9, 1923. Its serial number was 73987. Monroe came to treasure this mandolin above all others, and it became his main instrument in the recording studio and onstage.

In November 1985, an intruder broke into Monroe’s home and smashed his F-5 with a fireplace poker. After the instrument was painstakingly reconstructed by Gibson luthier Charlie Derrington from about 150 slivers of broken wood, it remained Monroe’s constant companion until his death in 1996.

Good stuff. Lucille was the first thing that came to mind.

Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet got accidentally bent and he liked the sound, felt he could hear his playing better and it became legend:

Still crazy that someone thought it would be a good idea to repaint over it for him!

Excellent call on Tony Levin's Chapman Stick. He did not invent it, but he perfected it.
