Longevity should not be a criterion for greatness.

Their drone was the rock version of disco.

And Mr Bono is far from my favorite singer.

That said, their early stuff wasn't bad. But eventually I tired of their droning.

(Note I didn't mention their limo liberal pomposity or hypocritical tax evasion)

How to dismantle an atomic bomb and all that you can’t leave behind were great albums. After those, they fell off

I would disqualify them simply for having a guy named "The Edge" in the band.

Yes although I don’t care for most of their work.

Throw U2 in with The Eagles and Springsteen in the Hall of Very Good. I don't enjoy their music, but I'm not going to deny their individual or collective musical talent.

Say what you want about politics, live performances, media hype, whatever. The music of the true elite speaks for itself - Abbey Road, Sticky Fingers, Led Zepplin IV. Show me a U2 album that can stand toe-to-toe, track for track, an I'll give them their due.

Few or none can stand up to that lineup of albums. There's "the greats", and then there's the ELITE (above).

Track for track, Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree are U2's apex, IMO. Not Abbey Road, but nice.

The Beatles broke up at their peak. Stones, Zeppelin, etc. had most of their heyday before the era of 24/7 media. U2 has suffered from overexposure, and thus lost some of the mystique they would otherwise have. Bono's mug was everywhere for a while. You don't hear much about Jagger or Plant unless they have an album or tour in the works.

Good point. None of the bands that have stuck around for 40 to 50 years maintain that level of respect, at least not for their new recordings. It doesn’t diminish from what they did in their heyday.
