What do you all think of this album?

I consider it the musical equivalent of O Brother, Where Art Thou?
It’s a near-perfect rendering of the South - its people, its terrain, its peculiar mix of ignorance and nobility - that is somehow insulting and uplifting at the same time, conceived by a total outsider who should have no insight into the inner workings of the Southern experience.
I like it.

Growing up, my dad would play this album constantly. I still have his copy on vinyl.
I think a lot of people get stuck on the song Rednecks - either loving it because it seems racist, or hating it for the same reason - not realizing its not racist at all. Newman is just pointing out the hypocrisy of northern liberals.
Louisiana 1927 kind of became a theme song for many after Katrina.
I think my favorite song on the album is Kingfish.
When my daughter was little, she though Naked Man was the funniest thing she ever heard.
I think what makes the album great is the fact that it's unabashedly Southern, sung in a way that a Southerner would tell similar stories.

I've never met a person that thought Rednecks was racist, the song is complete sarcasm, like it punches you right in the face with it from the beginning if you take 5 seconds to google Lester Maddox..
and then there's the line about LSU
Amazing album, I found a nice very clean almost unplayed copy at Here Today, Gone Tomorrow years ago.. but I've seen copies at thrift stores and even record shops for under $5

Fantastic album. Great concept and great delivery. Really features Newman’s song writing ability. A true classic.

We played this at the radio station frequently.
During his tour in 1974 he played in Lafayette. The crowd went crazy when he performed Rednecks. This blew Randy's mind!
When I saw him decades later he related this story. He felt like the audience was celebrating racism.
Glenn Frye and Don Henley perform backing vocals on this masterpiece.

Total outsider?

His "Land of Dreams" Album is a love song to New Orleans. Those two albums bookend each other perfectly.

Land of dreams is on my discogs wish list. Glad to hear this response, I love this album too. I picked up a used vinyl copy online, but the subject matter made me wonder about people's acceptance.

"My Daddy Knew Dixie Howell," which was not included on the original release but was included on the two-disc reissue, has some of my favorite lyrics of any song, ever.
My daddy knew Dixie Howell
Used to cut his hair
Daddy had a shop in Tuscaloosa
And Howell was on the team up there
When I was born, Daddy put a football in my cradle
Later on, he put a football helmet in my bed
So when he died, I put a razor in his coffin
And poured Vaseline all over his head
Magnolias! Magnolias, magnolias, Daddy
All the people come from miles around
To follow Daddy's coffin to the graveyard
To put poor Daddy's body in the ground
Magnolias! I wish you could have smelled the magnolias, Daddy
Don't you wish it was me layin' there instead?
But tomorrow, I will be sober, Daddy
And you will still be dead
My daddy knew Dixie Howell
Used to cut his hair
Daddy had a shop in Tuscaloosa
And Howell was on the team up there
When I was born, Daddy put a football in my cradle
Later on, he put a football helmet in my bed
So when he died, I put a razor in his coffin
And poured Vaseline all over his head
Magnolias! Magnolias, magnolias, Daddy
All the people come from miles around
To follow Daddy's coffin to the graveyard
To put poor Daddy's body in the ground
Magnolias! I wish you could have smelled the magnolias, Daddy
Don't you wish it was me layin' there instead?
But tomorrow, I will be sober, Daddy
And you will still be dead

It's an absolutely brilliant classic as are Sail Away (my personal favorite) and 12 Songs. Guilty is my lesser known favorite song on that one.
