that they shed because they said "frick this shite, let's do us".

It took them until their fifth album to figure that out?

Mine would go:

Metallica
Pantera
Slayer
Megadeth

I think there is a pretty wide gap with Metallica and Pantera, and an even wider gap between slayer and Pantera. I think Slayer was pretty damn important with their rifs and instrumentals, but lyrics lacked (for the most part), for me personally. Metallica and Pantera just felt more complete to me.

All played their part and were very important to music though.

The big four and the next four...this is my list of my preference first and then who I think is most influential...

1. Metallica - I come and go on them...but so many
2. Testament - yeah, I know...but damn I love Chuck Billy, Skolnick and Di Giorgio....they are so good live and so tight playing
3. Megadeth - when they are great...they are great...probably listen to their hits than most bands...
4. Slayer - Another band where there are members I just love to listen...Lombardo...Holt (yeah, I know he came in later), etc..and so many great songs
5. Exodus - again Holt being in here...Bonded by Blood alone will not let me drop it lower
6. Anthrax - love them...but when it comes to listens they are behind the five
7. Death Angel - them and overkill...I need to dig more..but liked them live when I saw them
8. Overkill -

Personally, if Pantera was in here, I put them 5th..

But if you go by influence

Metallica
Slayer
Megadeth
Exodus
Anthrax
Testament
Overkill
Death Angel

If I'm working out - Pantera

If I'm driving - Metallica

If I'm drunk - Megadeth

If I want to murder someone - Slayer

Easy. 1 & 2 are obvious.

1. Metallica (125 million albums sold)
2. Megadeth (38 million albums sold)
3. Pantera (20 million albums sold)
4. Slayer (20 million albums sold)

Metallica, Pantera, and Megadeth are hard for me to separate because they are all so good yet so different. Just depends on what I’m in the mood for. For me, no one else can do what Metallica does, no one else can do what Pantera does, and no one else can do what Megadeth does.

Never been a big fan of slayer. I love 3 of their songs and can’t listen to the rest.

Anthrax is the clear #4 for me.

ETA: Gun to my head, I go Metallica at #1 but it’s not clear cut because I have a bit of Metallica fatigue from listening to them SO much in the early days.
Pantera, I only really listen to Cowboys and Vulgar, but in the past decade I’ve listened to Vulgar more than any other album in my lifetime and never get tired of it. And when it first came out I used to only listen to a couple songs - I rediscovered it later in life. Megadeth has a larger body of hits for me, but Vulgar is just sooooo great.

The only one I even care for is Metallica and that only goes up until the Black Album.

I was one that was sort of put off by the polished studio Black Album. I learned to like some of it.

Never cared for the rest. Too heavy and too angry.

Metallica is the Vanilla Ice of Pop Metal

Megadeth is for disturbed boys under age of 15

Slayer is just boring.

Pantera for the win.

4 albums worth of Panterrible say otherwise.

Diamond Darrell! Rex Rocker! Gimme a friggin' break. They were a joke for almost 10 years.

Technically and musically Megadeth is a better band than the other three combined.

No question. Dave and Marty are lightyears ahead of the others

James' vocals give Metallica the edge though
