Howard Stern made Willie Nelson listen to Latoya Jackson covering Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain and he couldn't stop laughing despite obviously not wanting to.

Warrant/Jani Lane covered "We Will Rock You" in 1990. Even though it was a decent cover, the original version will always be unmatched.

American Aquarium covering Strawberry Wine.
As insufferable as BJ Barham is I am a pretty big fan of American Aquarium's music. However, their cover albums Slappers, Bangers & Certified Twangers, Vol. 1&2 was pretty mehhh.
Then there is Strawberry Wine. A song about a teenage girl falling in love for the first time and losing her virginity. It creeps me the frick out when I heard a grown man sing this song and not change the pronouns in the song. BJ is singing the song in the first person but doesn't change the love interest's pronouns so BJ in the first person keeps referring to the love interest/person he got boned by as a HE.

BJ Barham can’t sing a lick and those covers are terrible.

most songwriters in the alt country genre aren't amazing singers. if that's what's important to you, you could always go listen to pop country paint by numbers music.

to me those were just fun records to make for the band during covid. I do wish they could have changed up the covers to make them more of "theirs".
covering a song exactly the way the original is to me is boring.
