I remember hearing someone comment that if Gentry had taken the ideas of Fancy and Ode to Billy Joe and turned them into novels instead of songs, she would be hailed in the pantheon of Southern Gothic writers alongside Faulkner. I tend to agree with that.

hadn’t heard this song in decades until a few years ago as i was driving alone late at night and encountered it on the radio
i remembered it being a pretty cool sounding song but hadn’t really paid that much attention to the lyrics so i listened intently
