"If I was given just one wish it would be success for myself and my friends, and that would include lots of money."
Kinda like Liz Phair's honesty. Though her last album was pretty embarrassing.

Maybe it'd be more hipsterish to say, The Grifters were the best band of that generation..
Absolutely love them. Crappin' You Negative is in my Top Ten ever.

My friend, in retrospect, in my opinion, they were the best band of the 90's...
Crappin' You Negative is incredible... but I loved them all..
On their last album, Full Blown Posession, they were still going strong... hated that they broke up

There is a lot of open-mindedness in this thread.

I don't think most modern hipsters have listened to much of these guys.

Admit it, you focking hate it when a band you like starts becoming popular. Let it out, man.
I don't hate it when the band, itself, becomes popular...I hate when people I can't stand start listening to them.
For example, back around Kings of Leon's (saw you mention them earlier) Youth & Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak era, I was able to see KoL in 1,000 person venues. It was an intimate, high energy show and everyone around me knew all the words.
Each year since they have grown bigger and bigger until, one day, they played Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands and I was online at 10AM, with pre-sale password, and the closest I could get to the stage, for my little sister's first concert, was in uncovered reserved. Now, I know the business model and realize the high rollers get first choice but this is what irritates me the most when "my" bands become popular; the true fans get pushed out.
To top it off, the only song anyone within 100 feet of me got rowdy and sang along to was "Sex on Fire"

Thanks for the heads up on Grifters. I really dig them. But.....they sounded like a Pavement rip off. Again, I really like them......they are like another Pavement ripoff I really like ....a hockey Night.....Canadian band.....aye...,,
But it looks like they were releasing albums about the same time as Pavement.....whom ripped off whom.......hmmmmm......
Well now there is a Jon spencer rip off skin palace....cool but so derivative........I still like them.......
So now I'm listening to pavement. They are a whole step above grifters. I think some Tennessee boys went out to Cali and heard some weird shite and decided to copy it.

Guarantee these bands aren't hipster bands.
Black Keys hipster? Mumford & Sons? please.

That comparison has been made before, but listen to all their records and you'll see a big difference... They are a lot more stonesy, blues based..
Also, they were around before Pavement (who I love, too)
Edit: well, technically, they both started in '89.. My bad.

The Grifters were probably much more actual "slackers" than Pavement. Outside of Gary Young, that is.

Yeah, they also had a darker edge to theie sound, where Pavement was more playful, silly...
If they were ever gonna have a hit, this would have been it.. probably their most radio friendly song..
Last Man Alive
Also, really liked Shouse's post Grifters bands.. Those Bastard Souls and Blood Thirsty Lovers..
TBS had a way more accessible sound, too I think this song got a little air play
