What is it about a song that moves you to like it, enjoy it, defend it?

For me, it’s harmony….and not necessarily vocal harmony. It can be like the chords formed by Tom Scott’s two saxophones on Deacon Blues. It’s not even a really pronounced part of the song but you can hear the separate notes being played and how they work together.

Same with the guitar solo on Detroit Rock City. That’s a part I will always turn up to 10. It’s Joe Walsh and Don Felder on Hotel California.

It can be a great groove like Bonham on When the Levee Breaks or the way Rick drives the chorus on Photograph.

Sometimes it can be vocals. Bobby Kimball singing that arse kicking high stuff on the first few Toto albums, knowing he learned to sing like that right here in Louisiana.

It’s seldom been lyrics. I’m a melody/harmony guy first but there are some songs that have become standouts based on the lyrics.

So, what is it that catches your ear?
