Let us know more about this
Do you remember the red telecaster that I posted photos of on here?
Basically, more tellies similar to that one. Transparent color finish, aged look, wood pickguards, Fender vintage U.S.pickups, quality hardware. U.S. made bodies and necks. Put together by me. For the price of a MIM telecaster.
I think I've come up with a unique branding idea that will appeal to country type pickers, but I'm going to keep that under wraps a little longer, until all the eyes are crossed and the tea is dotted.
I ran into the guy that bought that red telly the other day, he's in love with it still and gigs with it 4 nights a week.

Squier makes one they call the Contemporary Telecaster.
The gunmetal gray with black hardware looks awesome
Id like that, with a sculpted body, and coil split for the humbuckers .
That would be a nice guitar.
ETA. Not that I'm placing an order. Yet.

I've had a few "inspired by Gibson" Epis cross the bench. Nicest modern era Epi acoustics yet,
The Epiphone 1957 SJ200s and the Banner J45s are even considerably better than those. Gibson custom shop is overseeing production of these and the woods and workmanship are incredible. Those are called IGC models.
I wouldn't buy a new one, but I will be getting a used 1957 SJ200 soon, I've seen a couple available.

Those are pretty damn nice for the price. I like how they put the controls in reverse.

Fender Standard (MIM) Stratocaster ($630)
FYI, the Standard is not an MIM. It is part of the new line they are making in Indonesia. The MIM model is the Player II and it is close to $1,000.

Have you tried one out yet?

No, but I’ve heard they are pretty good. I think they are the higher model Squier level builds and you’re paying more to get Fender on the headstock.

My main telly is an Indonesian made Squier Standard. It's a very good guitar. I'll be keeping that one.
The ceramic pickups and pots had to be upgraded though.

What I have found in Indonesian made guitars, they have done a really good job with the bones. Bodies and necks are really a lot better than you would think. Components are hit or miss and the pickups are lots of times pretty inadequate.
I have a Sire bass I picked up and it is outstanding. Pickups and preamp are actually a lot better than I thought they would be. Yet, I had to replace a $4.50 output jack because the one they used was a POS. It was awful. It's like putting a retread tire on a brand new car.

Yeah, the neck on that squier telly is fantastic and has beautiful figuring.
I originally bought it at a pawn shop for 100 bucks with a molded Fender case included. I sold the case and paid for the whole deal.
The cost of the pickups are all I have in it.

Let me know when you get into Jazzcasters. I've been really tempted to start building one, but I literally have no tools or luthier skills. I'm just an engineer who likes to build things and plays guitar poorly.

I am going with a Gibson for that money. Definitely a Gibson convert after having owned one for over a year now.

My friend has one, it smokes any Gibson I've ever tried out, and that's a lot.
I'm not saying you are wrong, but this makes no sense from a business or marketing perspective.
Why would the "affordable, budget conscious" brand be better than the premium brand from the same manufacturer?

All I can say is " try them out". Then you can decide for yourself.
I think these guitars are highly profitable for Gibson, due to the difference in the price of union labor in the U.S. vs. the super low price of labor in China.
The price of a new U.S. SJ200 is around $5,500. How many do you think they can sell in a year?
How many $1,300 dollar Epiphones can they sell, if they make sure they are great guitars?
I can't afford a $5,500 dollar guitar and most pickers can't either.
This is the reality of high labor costs and the types of decisions that corporations are making to be profitable.
I will not buy anything new from China if I can help it, but most other pickers don't care. They will buy those guitars if the quality is kept high and the price affordable.
Edit: I just did some checking. Gibson isn't Union since they moved manufacturing from Michigan.
Pretty sure their employees are very well paid and have pretty expensive benefit packages.

I can probably do that, as long as you don't want a painted finish.

What you're talking about is exactly what I meant about getting 2 nice guitars instead of one with a name.
Posted on 9/10/25 at 11:38 am to FirstCityDawg
I'd spend $500 on the guitar
and the other $1,500 on lessons
J/K
Buying the $2,000 guitar would negate the need for the lessons.
