2k on electrics I would buy a used G&L ASAT and. used G&L Legacy.

2k on an acoustic would be a used D-18

And I only play acoustics where wood and even their orientation matter. With things such as quarter sawn or it's medullary rays being considered important.

I was pretty certain some here wouldn't agree and was really interested in their take?

As this goes against what's generally accepted.

There is the best thing about this threads original intention
It asks "what would you do?" " What do you need, what would help you with whatever you're doing?"
But then it somehow becomes a discussion about labels, status and value..
We don't all need the same things.

If you can play it and make it speak, nothing else really matters. It’s all personal preference at that point.

I have those kinds of guitars, that I don't even play much, I'm mostly going to be on an acoustic, but I like having several different ones that have different character.
Maybe I have a simple song in E major, I get the foundation progression worked out, then I do some licks to it on my resonator tuned in open E.
It can change the whole attitude of everything.
I mostly need several good lower priced guitars.

Example: one Gibson or two Epiphones?

Gibson all day.

I'd buy either a Gibson or a Martin in acoustic or a Gibson or a Fender in electric. Older the better. But you're not getting older ones sub 2k.

I've been in both camps.

I used to have like 5 or 6 cheaper guitars but decided to sell them all and buy one really nice one.

I ended up with an Atkin D37, basically their version of an HD28. I also have a "beater", Epiphone Slash J45.

I know Leo Fender was involved with G&L, but if you want a Telecaster, just buy a Telecaster.

I've always found it funny with basses. Every make makes a P bass and a Jazz bass. You'll see people talking and should I get the Lull, should I get the Lakland, should I get the etc., and they will always ask, does it have that P bass sound and tone?

Well, Fender still makes them just like they have since the 50s.

I'm not a fan of "knock-offs"

There are plenty of different designs of guitars. If you want a unique guitar, buy one. But if you want an established design, like a Strat, a Tele or Les Paul, then buy the original. They make them in almost every price point.

In the cases I'm talking about, they are looking at guitars that are more expensive than the Fender. But they want a P bass.

Most folks that save up and get the $5,000+ Sadowsky/Lull/Lakland/Etc. P bass or Jazz bass will talk about how awesome it is and no one makes them like that and blah blah blah and a year later they are selling it. I do think there is a point of diminishing returns for guitars/basses and I think its close to the $2,000 the OP mentioned. I think that is fluid and probably about $2,500 now. I think over that you are getting a great instrument, but not really better than what you can get at that $2,500 point.

There are examples of others that are unique and at really high price points. I can kinda sorta understand. I would love a Wal bass, but I'm not paying $15,000. If you get one new, it is still close to $9,000 and you have to wait for up to 5 years. Screw that. Just had an idea on a different topic. I'll do another post.

Because I have too much stuff. I'm going to sell one of my basses, one of my amps, and two speaker cabs. I just don't need all that stuff.

And, I'm done. Don't need and not buying anything else. I promise. Not going to do it.
