Is he the next Giddy or the next Dante Exum?
That's my concern with Dyson.
He's not the most athletic, explosive, or sound shooter/scorer. He's elite for his age at Pick n Roll and a solid passer. Has great defensive measurables. Great drive and character, so you'd like to think he'll continue to grow. But people thought that with Exum too.

I would say historically when you see a guy outperform his draft slot it's common that guy either wasn't a shooter coming out, or he was old.
Sounds right - and obviously we still have the shot guru (Vinson) on our coaching bench as well.

I think Agbaji is our best fit, followed by Mathurin if we pick at 8. For our team culture, having another very willing defender (agbaji) would be awesome...hes solid enough at 3 + the Vinson magic to where he can be a real nba 3+d threat.

His athleticism will always limit his ceiling, despite being a jumbo guard with ball handling & passing skills. Nothing really pops, doesn’t shoot it well, not overly aggressive. Some of this will come with age, but even still, I think his lack of athleticism just limits his upside to a complimentary player at best

I think he's neither. I view him more in the Derrick White/Kyle Anderson model. Long pesky defender, defend multiple positions, good processor/passer on the wing, can run the PnR for you, pressures the rim. The real question with him is the shooting from deep, which he improved on throughout the season.

Meant more in the boom vs bust sense than pure comparative sense.
Gun to my head I think he's gonna make it in the league, but unless he really shows some stuff in workouts/combine etc. I wouldn't take him over Sharpe/Griffin/Mathurin personally.

I think his floor is higher than those guys, but his ceiling probably isn't. It's what we were discussing in another thread, the chances you draft a guy that actually sticks around to their 2nd or 3rd contract is slim.
So in that sense I would agree with Sharpe, Griffin, and Mathurin.

Can we please stop with the Agbaji at 8 talk? If we're going to do that we may as well deal the pick instead of reaching on him. He's a back half of the lottery guy. Look at Duarte and Kispert last year for your closest comps imo

Having Mathurin at 4 but AJ Griffin outside of the lottery is weird. They do a lot of the same things well.
Griffin has a great head on his shoulders. He is going to be a really good pro.
Agreed. I wish I could have both. I like Griffin more and think he will be slightly better. But I think Mathurin's ball handling is better and will ultimately serve us better for replacing Graham.

But they turn their nose up at the 18yr old who just shot 48% in ACC play last year. The absolute worst case with Griffin is you get a knock down shooter. Kid has a lot of offensive upside & the ability to hold his own on defense too
Would absolutely take him or Mathurin. I wonder if Griffin could develop enough with the ball in his hands to be on the floor with Trey. That's a deadly combo coming off the bench.

Duarte and Kispert aren’t bad comps and both had decent rookie years with both starting over 30 games and being fairly efficient. It seems like the Pacers in particular are very happy they picked Duarte based on their press clippings.
Nonetheless Agbaji is pretty clearly a better athlete (42” VJ at combine) and has more length (8’7.5” standing reach) than either of those guys.
IMO the big question for Agbaji now is between the ears. Early in his career the question was about his shooting, but he continued to improve and became one of the NCAAs best shooters and if that were the whole story he would be a lock for a top 5 pick.
But, his lack of natural assertiveness on the court, particularly in big moments, has shown to be a real question mark. If he is able to be able to develop some moxey, then he pretty clearly has the tools to be a star, but IMO there is real risk his he will fail to become the sum of his parts.
The thing I like about Agbaji is he seems like a guy that can help a team from day one with the tools he already has, so if he never takes that next step as an initiator, then he is still a valuable 3 and D guy.
That all being said, if the Pelicans could trade down and get him then it’s something to consider. Maybe you could pick up something to throw in a trade to help upgrade from Graham.
If the Pels could get Agbaji and an upgrade for Graham out of the Lakers pick then I would take it in a heartbeat.
