We need more scoring off the bench.

Since you're so smart, how about you tell us what SF we could have gotten for that contract.

DC brings Def, Energy & a touch of scoring off the bench.

So please enlighten us Simon

Unless they start Tyreke at SF or Jrue isn't ready, one of Tyreke/Jrue/Gordon will be coming off the bench with Ryno and Cole, not to mention Ajinca. Another scoring wing would be nice, but the deals we've seen make it obvious we never had the assets to make that happen.

Even if he only shoots the 3 from the corner, that's a big upgrade over that 18 ft corner 2 he took 80+ times last season.

Truth. That's a terribly inefficient shot. He only shot 38.6 from the left and 42.9 from the right, 40.7 overall. If he steps back to the corner, 27.1 gives the same number of points.

That said, I've been doing some thinking about the relative value argument. While the points per make is an easy comparison to make, it is not always that simple. We regularly argue spacing, but setting the defense if often ignored. It's far easier to set the defense on a make than a miss. On a corner 3, your shooter is not able to get back defensively and he's too far away to provide much rebounding at all. You need two other guys getting back defensively, which basically leaves you with only 2 guys available for rebounding. So, a 33% decrease in FG% could result in the same number of points, but an increase in tough defensive possessions. Just some food for thought.

I've given some thought to this, too. You also have to consider that longer shots=longer rebounds, which also give the offense a better opportunity for offensive rebounds. I believe this was brought up in one of the GSW playoff series this year.

Teletovic has been oft-injured the last two years. That being said I wouldn't mind bringing him and Mbah a Moute in on vet min deals. He is not a guy I'd take over DC though

Teletovic is also a RFA leveraging a return to Europe.

Exactly. The Spurs basically gave up on crashing the offensive glass to keep their defensive integrity. It's about floor balance, but that goes with any shot you take. That comes down to coaching and drilling. It also matters on how you generate corner 3s. Are they open/catch and shoot? If so, that FG% will go up. Are you taking them just to take them? Then, that's not particularly wise.

To me, the gains of OREB are minimal over the course of a season (obviously in shorter samples, they can be swing the balance of a game/series- gm 3 v Warriors, Cleveland, etc). I'd rather have guys willing and able to shoot corner 3s to stretch the defense and open up other ways to attack than crashing the glass for a ~25% chance at a OREB. Your defense can be unset if you crash the glass too.

This has already been thought about by basketball analytics people... and they came to the conclusion that it still is better to take the 3.
