re: Did we trade Asik for Mirotic?

Asik next year would be around $11.3M and Mirotic $12.5. Dell's complaining about $1.2M next year? With the buyout money saved, Pelicans save $1.8M. Can they not clear $1.2M in a single year?

Yeah, the Ringer is really dialed in when it comes to the Pels

Dell can, but maybe he's getting push back from above (which is often the case).

Surprised Bill gave his people time off from writing AD to Boston articles.

Not so sure. From Kevin O'Connor:

What also doesn't make sense is I'm hearing the Pelicans have been trying to dump Asik with their first—not trying to get value back (like Mirotic). Why don't Bulls deal Mirotic for value to another team, then absorb Asik into cap room and get the Pelicans first? Weird situation.

I also don't understand why Mirotic is so worried about the money anyway. Someone will pay him more than $12.5M for a 6'10 F averaging 17/6 shooting 43% 3pt.
It's all very strange.

I can’t help but wonder how awesome this would have been with boogie on the court...
WHY GOD? WHY???

I guess he just doesn't want to be traded to someone who will only keep him for half a season

Then he should have Chicago pick up the option and make the trade. The reports that this trade is on the rocks because Dell doesn’t want to pick up the option means Dell basically just want some to use a 1st to dump Asik. Ridiculous.

Yeah, there's not much point to have been shopping the 1st during the season to dump Asik. That doesn't help much unless it's done in coordination with another move. But you wouldn't be able to make much of a 2nd move if you just burned your first dumping Asik.

The dude likes king cake and wants more than one season worth?

If we get him, I hope he's here longterm. Mirotic, AD, and Cousins form a perfect 3 man rotation at PF and C. The team will need to monitor Boogie's minutes once he returns anyway.
Exactly. You would basically need a 4th big as insurance (Cunningham). And that’s it for the front court

As far as we know, that is exactly what is happening. The Bulls are likely requesting more from the Pels in order for them to retain the option. The Pels were never trying to sacrifice a pick to get rid of Asik. That makes zero sense. If we stretched Asik, then he would only be a $3M cap hit for us. You think Dell is trying to give away a draft pick to save $3 million?

Yeah, I don't know why NoFox is dismissing hardball when he's right in pointing out the ridiculousness of the Pels alleged position. Speaking of hardball, Chicago says your move Dell

Nikola Mirotic is traveling with the Bulls to Portland, per team.
Kris Dunn ended up not traveling.

Ryan Baker @RyanBakerMedia · 4m Lots of moving & shaking with proposed Niko Mirotic trade to Pelicans, but as of now, the deal is off. Niko left with the #Bulls on road trip to Portland. Lauri Markkanen (personal reasons) & Kris Dunn (concussion) not traveling. Stay tuned... @cbschicago 2

I'll throw out possibility that a trade has been agreed to on paper but because of the Pels game tonight they're waiting until tomorrow to formally agree.
If trade is submitted today we wouldnt have Asik tonight. Fighting for a playoff spot we can't really afford to just give up another front count player and not immediately have the replacement. The Bulls play tomorrow, but not having Asik and Mirotic for one game only furthers their goal of losing as many games as possible.

If a deal was in place even tentatively both players would 100% be held out to avoid injury and the deal falling apart.
I think the deal really is off, for now, pending some kinks being worked out.

They said on The Jump that it's on Mirotic to decide whether or not he wants to take the $12M or become a free agent and that the deal is off because he is blocking it somehow.

I’m not dismissing the hardball angle. I am just nervous that reporters are mentioning and we are at least posturing that we want dump Asik for a rental.
I want chicago to pick up the option. I want the Bird rights. What happens if Mirotic says fine, I’ll go? Then we don’t have his bird rights should we need them.

Maybe. But if you're the Bulls, do you really care about risk of Asik getting injured? If Asik is injured, it only pushes them to more losses (presumably signing someone off the street) and a better draft position.
Mirotic flying with the team only means no deal has been submitted. The Pelicans can find the man a first class flight from Portland to NOLA if they agree to a trade.
