I was hoping Hawkins would take that next step and could fill CJ's role next year.

TeddyP, I'm not sure Hawkins can ever fill CJ role. CJ gives you some of everything from shooting, playmaking, assists. He falls short in the area of defense (Probably because he exerts so much energy on offense, dribble, dribble) and thinking he has to be the one to save the ship.

Hawkins don't seem to make anyone better on the floor, just spot up shooting or mid range shooting that is sometimes good, sometimes not.

Trey never showed any real drive and dish ability before this year, so Hawkins may figure it out. That said, Trey is your CJ replacement.

CJ has averaged 20ppg on good teams, so I fail to see your point here?

Then we're in trouble, because he doesn't have a quarter of CJ's bag

If CJ hadn't disappeared in the playoffs every year I'd be more comfortable keeping him long term. But he has played poorly, not just on defense but offense too. Is he light years better than Hawkins? Sure. But if he falls apart in the playoffs does it matter? Not to mention that it's going to be hard to tank with Murray/CJ/Trey/Zion/Missi

He's not going to get better moving forward.

His shooting won't dwindle, but that defense will get worse.

the question is, can you parlay him into a 6th man and hawkins move up into a better role.

ideally, you need a backup 3, backup 4/5 and move on from Ingram.

Murray/Alvarado - this duo actually seems to be VERY solid and promising, esp if Alvarado's 3pt shooting holds up
McCollum/Hawkins - both good shooters, but streaky. the issue is hawkins inconsistency; what to do with that?
Jones/Murphy - both do polar opposite things. ones an elite defender. ones a better scorer. their weaknesses are the others strength
Zion - elite threat around the rim, can do it all, but can't stay healthy
Missi - solid rebounder. solid defender. solid around the rim. nothing else

Backup 4/5 with JRE and Theis are DOWNFALLS

We’re not trying to tank. I think the team has made that abundantly clear.

I 100 Percent agree!
plus CJ McCollum has averaged 20.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 67 games in the playoffs in his career.

I agree unless the plan isn’t trying to win next year which is stupid with Z, Trey, Herb all on 2nd contracts.

We will be stuck trying to trade for players like him to get over the hump the next year or 2 and will be stuck wasting capital for a player we already have.
