Not in Pels world, he was backup and often primary 5.

Not sure where the MVP-level talent comes from. Potentially maybe but as of yet except for flashes of that potential in-between injuries I haven't seen it.

As far as back up plan. You saw the only backup plan the Pelicans can afford this past season.

When Zion played this year he was playing in the MVP tier. I don't know what you're watching.

I think you’re teasing too much into that statement. When Zion is out we only have 2 rotational bigs, which, as we’ve seen recently, makes it tough to win.

We need to be set up to where we’re capable of being a #6 seed or better without Zion so that we can win a title when he’s healthy

Zion is also a unique player, so how can we construct a roster/scheme around Zion and then this "backup plan" at the same time

Don’t envision Zion as the focal point. Zion be the secondary playmaker/garbage man so others can thrive, like Murphy and Herb.

Draft the next Julius Randle. Draft a four that a can shoot and protect the rim. Like what Hayes was supposed to be.

I done really thi k you should/can call it MVP tier if its not done consistently. That's kind of the hallmark of "MVP" tier.

I guess it you want to reach, and hope ypu cam say he has the potential to do it consistently if healthy but then theirs that pesky cavet of actually being consistently healthy.

But I get the desperation of wanting successs in New Orleans and wanting one of those #1 over all picks to actually workout in New Orleans.

There is no such thing as a back up plan to Zion because there is no player like a healthy Zion. If the goal is to put this team in the best position to win a title (which it should be), then you spend all of your resources to build a team that best suits Zion and hope he is healthy.

Griff could’ve done both…a good stretch 4/5 maximizes shooting around Zion (and BI), and also provides a functional alternative when he’s out.

As was stated, Griff has had a chance for Lauri Markkanan twice, which would seem to make almost too much sense, but there are other options, either near-starter or deeper bench support types depending on the money allocated.

There will be options this summer too. 2023 Free Agents - SportsTrac

Its why in my offseason post I sold out to get two bigs.

1) I dont trust Zion
2) Our shooters cant be injured 24/7

Zion carried the team to wins against great teams by himself. The stuff he was doing in December was everything you imagined when he was drafted.

We already do have a backup plan. His name is Trey Murphy III.

If you watched Randle last night, a Julius Randle type should be the last person you'd want to draft.

His effort in a playoff game was a completely embarrassment.

He doesn't care, if the ball isn't in his hands, he gives zero effort on either side of the ball. It's so bad.

I don’t care if Zion only gives us 40 to 50 regular season games, takes every back to back off.

As long as he stays healthy, we win a high percentage of those 50 games and split/small loss on the 30 games without him and he’s healthy for the playoffs.

Problem with Zion is that you can’t trade him.

Given his injury history, you get lowballed for him. And you don’t dare trade him to the Lakers or Knicks lest he “miraculously” fix his injury issues and become what he was promised to be.

Best case scenario for trading him is a Kawhi one where he goes to a Siberia team, like Toronto was at the time, willing to take a risk on him.
