Just listened to Sam Vecenie's pod.

He did not liked this past Bowen stuff and also how he presented himself at the combine.
Generally not a good feedback for Bowen.

Which is the reason he would be available at 51. He has not played competitive basketball in quite some time. Many expected him not to look great at the combine. I would take the gamble on his talent and hope that you can get the attitude stuff sorted out. If not then nothing lost.

ETA - just read an interview where he said he wouldn’t play overseas, so that rules him out. He’s nowhere close to ready to being rostered and we don’t have a G-League team.

Sounds like the Mavs are still interested in Boogie.

quote:

Considering Carlisle’s affinity for a rim-running center, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see them connected with Bamba, who posted an unfathomable 7-foot-10 wingspan and 9-foot-7.5 standing reach. But I’ve received mixed signals regarding Dallas’s interest in the Texas big man.

Ever since word spread in league circles in March that Dirk Nowitzki would return to the Mavericks for his 21st season, there have also been rumblings that the Dallas front office will look to make additions this summer that can put the team back on a winning track. The Mavericks can create space to sign a max free agent, and multiple league sources expect them to pursue a trio of big men: DeAndre Jordan, DeMarcus Cousins, and restricted free agent Julius Randle. If the Mavericks do indeed plan to pursue expensive bigs in free agency, then it’d make sense to target a primary scorer, like Porter, rather than Bamba.

...A core of Porter and Harrison Barnes at forward, Smith at guard, and Jordan at center seems solid on paper, with some upside to get even better. I’d be less enthusiastic if Dallas signed Cousins coming off a ruptured Achilles. The Mavericks have already dealt with the repercussions of signing a player coming of an Achilles injury in Wesley Matthews, who still produces, but lacks the same bounce and burst that made him one of the NBA’s best 3-and-D players. Cousins, an unrestricted free agent this year, will beat the odds if he becomes the same dominant-yet-flawed player he was prior to the injury. But Dallas’s history working with Cousins’s agent, Jarinn Akana, is undeniable. Of Akana’s 12 NBA clients, five are current or former Mavericks, and one played for their G League team: Boogie’s brother, Jaleel Cousins.

The one good thing is that I don't think Boogie is at the top of the list for either the Lakers or Mavs. I don't think that gets them any discount on the money, but it could make a 2 + 1 at the max good enough to accept and move on to recruiting PG-13 to NOLA.

i'm firmly in the camp of "anything more than 2 yrs is an unacceptable risk". and i like boogie, a lot.

I just do not see Dallas seriously competing for Boogie. I think they will take a run at Deandre Jordan and Aaron Gordon. Capela also makes a lot of sense for them given what they are looking for.

The fit seems really poor with the coach:
quote:

Considering Carlisle’s affinity for a rim-running center...

Rick Carlisle has said himself that he thinks Dennis is best with a big who rolls hard and finishes above the rim,”

Carlisle would have an aneurysm dealing with Boogie's nonsense on a nightly basis. Boogie would probably go at Carlisle physically at some point too with his overbearing style. I remember them getting into it one time when he was on the Kings. It just seems like a disaster signing for them.

I also wonder if LA/Dallas would actually offer him a 4 year max if they did make it all the way down their FA board to Boogie. They are both at a point where if Boogie is a shell of himself then they just seriously derailed their rebuilds by giving him max money for 4 years.

If the Pels try to get cute and low ball him then he has reason to wait for other offers, but if they give him the full max at 2 + 1 then the only way he beats that is to get a full 4 year max from another team, which maybe isn't something to bet on.

Personally I would try to talk DMC into a combined deal with Rondo. We would love to give you Max but also want to re-sign Rondo. To remain competitive we can offer You and RR COMBINED max money. For You ~27. For Rajon 3,9. Those 4 millions is very important tax-wise

If Boogie wants a 3 year max or a 5 year max, can the Pels not start Boogies contract a 27M and then raise it higher in years 2 and 3?
That way he isn’t getting paid heavily in the year he will miss most likely half the season, but by the 2nd year he will be ready to go for 82+ games.

There is a level of raises - Pels have leverage there resigning him.

But you cannot sign him in year one for 27 and then 35.
Using bird rights you can give him up to 8% raise.

Personally I dont want to re-sign for more than two years. Unless third year is a team option.

The Milsap deal?

3 years/91 million

3rd year team option

Or, you could do 3rd year player option, and only 10 mil guaranteed. So, in effect a two way option. I don't think that was taken out with the new CBA.

I think he deserves 2 years with the 3rd as a fully guaranteed player option. That is more than fair, and would force a team like LA or Dallas to give him the 4 year max, which really is a big gamble.

There is no way Dallas would sign him if Rick Carlisle is their coach. It's a little concerning that Cousins agent has a good relationship with the Mavs, but there's no way Carlisle wants Cousins, or Cousins wants Carlisle.
I also don't think the Lakers would panic and as a last hope offer cousins the max after all their other plans failed. Of course they want to win, but it's not like they are losing money by being mediocre right now. They can wait another year.

I'd say the biggest concern would be Cousins being courted by someone like Washington and demanding a S&T to them, but i'm not worried about that either.

He'll be a Pelican next year.

i think i'd rather Porter over Cousins as well. When i said im' not worried about it, i meant i don't see it being a real possibility, not that i don't want it to happen.

Boogie at it again on Instagram. This time liking a comment saying the Pels need to offer the max:

The center appeared to tip his hand after liking a comment on an Instagram post discussing his future.

"Whoever paying the most pretty much," the comment said. "Pels need to offer him the max."

I wouldn't expect that he wants less than that. I also wouldn't expect that anyone is going to pay that, or I at least hope the Pels won't.
