Dennis Schröder – In another offseason event of unfollowing people on social media, Schröder deleted all traces of Hawks material on his Instagram. Shocking. Schröder is still fairly young and can get to the rim with the best of them. However it’s unclear how much value he actually provides to a team as analytics have painted a net negative every single year of his career. Schröder also potentially comes with a suspension due if convicted on domestic battery incident he was involved in. He is a potential buy-low opportunity if the Hawks want to get rid of him at any cost and will accept Hill without any picks. Schröderr’s locker room fit is unclear, perhaps he can be mentored by Rondo who will eventually hand the keys to him. We know Rondo isn’t a long term solution, maybe Schröder can be?
I think the Pels have finally started building a culture that would allow them to assimilate a player like him and figuring out how to find Rondo's replacement long term with no money is something I haven't been able find a good solution for. Long term this team needs a starting SF and guard next to Jrue.

I wonder if Dell will try to buy an earlier second round pick. Could have a solid guy drop to the early 2nd.

Just read that article and none of the options listed are better than a sign and trade for Porter, IMO.
You don't have to use the Tax payer MLE, and you can trade Ajinca around the deadline to squeak under the Tax line, by attaching a 2nd or using him in some sort of trade filler.
Davis/Diallo
Mirotic/Hill
Porter/Miller
Holiday/Moore
Rondo/Jackson
Is better than any of the options really laid out in the article, IMO.
Is Porter overpaid? Yes, that is likely. But, he also has true wing size, unlike a large portion of the players mentioned as targets in the article. KCP, Green, Bradley, Barton, Redick, and Tyreke are all undersized and are better at defending guards than forwards. It would be a similar situation as the Pels have now with Moore playing SF.
Ariza or possibly Hood are the only options that I like and are "fits' with this team, and they are not without faults of their own.
I'm not even going to get into the possible big man trades that were thrown out.
ETA: I could get down with Hill+Diallo for Dieng+Tyus Jones, though.

That was an interesting argument from MM in the latest podcast saying the potential tax savings could subsidize buying a pick. I'm just not sure who sells you the pick. Dallas at 33? The Knicks at 36? Philly does have 2 1sts in addition to 38/39, so you can probably get one of those.

good article on BSS today on post-cousins team building options/suggestions
quote:
Rule 1: Avoid the Sign-and-Trade
Rule 2: Rondo Must Be Signed Using the Non-Bird Exception
Rule 3: Avoid Consolidating Salary
Rule 4: Avoid Spending the MLE on a Big Man
Rule 5: Trade Solomon Hill for a Functional Big Man
I take exception to Rules 1 and to an extent 5. I also think the MLE is a bandaid. Everyone knows the space is limited this summer and MLE's are going to want nothing but 1+1's.
I have tweeted with Kumar, but my preference if Boogie decides he can get a 3 or 4 year max is probably:
(1) S&T Boogie for Porter & Satoransky
(2) S&T Boogie to DAL/LAL by paying for a trade exception
(1) We would need to dump Solo/Anjica using assets which sucks. It is a big gamble, but I think Porter is a super role player that if put in the right system would really blossom. Sato would allow us some jumbo lineups while still allowing Jrue to be aggressive and not run the offense. This would be buying into Gentry's system 100% and believing that team ball exceeds individual talent.
(2) This is the star chasing route. We pay DAL/LAL hundreds of thousands of dollars to S&T a player they were jut going to sign anyway similar to what CLE did with the Bucks for Deladova. This allows us to package Niko + picks for a 7-9 year max contract. This is aiming for that "right player" that Dell said we would pay the tax. We could S&T Niko for PG keeping OKC from paying the tax without involving a 3rd team. It allows us the most flexibility to use the space under the tax that Boogie leaving provides.
I am also 100% against paying big money ($10M+) for big men who cannot space or guard out to the perimeter. Same with guards who are not shooters and cannot guard up.

Nevermind, just realized the Boogie trade exception would be the same size as Paul George's new deal.

I think letting Boogie walk over $$$ and then buying an early 2nd is pretty bad optics for AD unless more impressive moves happen after that.

Yeah, PG and Boogie would get the same salary if maxed. The particular PG plan relies on a lot of things coming together
(1) PG wants to come here,
(2) Dallas offers Boogie max salary year 1,
(3) Dallas agrees to take $$$ for S&T,
(4) OKC agrees to S&T PG for Niko + pick(s).
It is a real longshot, but perhaps more likely than PG agreeing to take $10M less to play here with Boogie and OKC agreeing to take Moore/Niko with their payroll.

Gonna give it a listen in a bit

I think the optics part for AD is a bit overrated. Sometimes guys are friends off the court but on the court it's a different story. AD understands it's business and the team will do what is best for winning.

I'm definitely softening my stance on we have bring Boogie back.
I understand the economics of it all and how the options are extremely limited, but all of the stuff surrounding him, the achilles injury, etc has soured me a bit.
I'm pretty open to alternatives at this point.

I don't think the optics of letting Boogie go is necessarily bad and I have stated many times before I think the Boogie/AD relationship is overstated. Just the optics of paying millions to get an early second who won't contribute for the next 2 years, then 2 weeks later letting Boogie walk over money is pretty bad unless the Boogie move is followed up by moves that add immediate talent.
Posted on 5/22/18 at 11:42 am to NOFOX
Yeah that's fair. I think from a FO perspective they care less about those optics. If Boogie walks, it's independent of what they do about acquiring a pick. But I def see it from an external perspective.

I feel the same way. I’m not hard pressed to have Boogie back although that is our best option
As for the article, great job as always by the BSS guys. I have a question though. If Boogie signed for $27 mil and we could get rid of Ajinca. Wouldn’t that put us below the apron and above the tax giving us, the full MLE, the full, BAE, and allow us to resign Rondo with the non-bird rights exception?
Does that work or am I misreading the cap situation?

You can't go above the apron by using the full MLE.

You have to factor incentives and so we'd be hard capped because of those. Wouldn't be able to use MLE and BAE. Would need to shed significant salary.

People bring up the BAE every offseason, not just Pels fans, every fan base, yet you rarely see it used by anyone.

I think Washington used to for Jodee Meeks lol. I think a lot of times teams just don't have room to use it either.

If there was a way to bring back Tyreke with the MLE, i'd be all for it. He's a better defender than most think, and he'd be a great off the bench guy. I've said it many times before as well, he's a point guard, and can keep Jrue playing off the ball. He's shown he has the ability to be that 6th man in the scoring roll, but we also k
Rodney Hood has some terrible advanced stats, especially defensively. That's hard to do when you played for one of the better defensive teams in the league. i'd rather avoid him.now he can shift to the facilitating point guard.
they listed both Jerami Grant and Nerlens Noel as BAE targets. Seems like they would get more than that. I'd like to have a young energetic guy like Grant. And you'd think guys like Rondo and AD could get Noel to quit being a knucklehead, and he'd be a nice 5 to have if Cousins leaves.
