Read my edit above and I would like to hear your response on how Zion is a top ten rim protector???

The top huy Poetl has a plus/minus of -33 and the second guy Gafford is -116. So yeah that stat is meaningless.
Gobert has the best DIFF% at the rim, which is the delta between expected FG% and actual…

Thats great we’re not getting Gobert but go ahead who else is better than JV we should get??

JV averages 1.3 blocks per game and Allen 1.0 block. JV is not the problem here and overall, our defense is one of the league’s best. Basically, you trade JV for a guy like Allen or Turner you’re not making this team better.
Blocks isn't the most important stat when looking at rim protection. You can get a better sense of a guy's defensive ability by looking at how many shots to they affect at the rim, and what percentage of shots are being scored against them at the rim.
Look at the two post above yours. Opponents are basically scoring 7 out of every 10 shots taken against him at the rim. That is downright bad.
The Pels have a good defense, because of a few factors:
Willie's scheme: which is to take advantage of our excellent point of attack defenders, and sellout completely on opposition drives to the basket. The Pels crash in with all defenders helping against drives, with the understanding that they will live with giving up 3pt shots.
This leads to the 2nd reason which is over the past two seasons, the Pels have had extremely good shooting luck defensively against the three. Advanced stats show that teams miss a ton of open 3pt shots against us.
The reason Willie's scheme is to sellout completely against the drive is because we don't have solid rim protection.
What we do have is excellent point of attack defenders (Herb, Dyson, Jose) that are great in getting into the passing lanes and causing steals.

My response is that you apparently don't know how to read stats, because Zion is no where near top 10 in DFG% at the rim.

Ok so say we go by your theory and trade JV for better rim protection, you think that makes us a better team?
JV is a plus 85 overall- meaning he has meaningful offense even if hes not the best defending at the rim.
Guys like Allen, Poetl, Gafford and Capella all are in the negative in regards to plus/minus. I ask again is rim protection really what this team needs in todays nba or is it just something overblown and meaningless? Unless you’re getting Gobert, trading JV won’t make this team better.

Plus/Minus is largely dependent upon who you are playing with.
JV is a good regular season center, he will get abused in the playoffs where teams will just scheme to put him in positions that are disadvantageous to the Pels.

Yeah ok. Except most good to great players have positive plus/minus individually.
I mean we have trouble winning regular season games and you’re worried about playoffs. You really think getting a rim protecting defense center with our personnel makes us a better team?
You do realize that our spacing will be even more clogged. Its like you’re going full steam with the Willie Green defense philosophy. I’m sorry this team just doesn’t need that. If you can find a center who can stretch the floor and defend thats great- but those are few and far between.

This team should not need JV’s offense

He should be behind Zion, BI, CJ, and Trey in the pecking order at a minimum.
quote:Val is 15th in block rate in the NBA, he's been no slouch this season.
Ultimately this team will need some rim protection.

In regards to defending fg% Zion is ahead Capella and Anthony Davis so take that for what you will.
Well he rarely ever gives a shite to actually be there to protect it, so if you pick and choose when you feel like defending the rim, you’ll probably have favorable stats.

That was my fault I read some stat incorrectly lol

I’m sorry, but Jonas shows up and plays hard every single day. And I mean every day. I’m not interested in changing that for this team.

Yup wholeheartedly agree. I think trading for Jarrett Allen is exactly what Willie wants and frankly I’m not giving Willie anything because his defense first mentality just doesn’t work.

But he is giving up 70% of the baskets taken against him at the rim

Allen is also well-known as a high energy guy that gives a shite for what it's worth

Yet we’re a top defense and hes a big reason we’re winning games- not losing them. Maybe again that stat isn’t as important as you think it is.
Posted on 12/20/23 at 1:22 pm to 504Voodoo
Hes also a clog and that doesn’t generate his own offense, cant shoot threes or even has a jumper.
Posted on 12/20/23 at 2:11 pm to Pels_Yaz
Jonas has been nothing short of amazing this year. He’s even playing solid D and blocking shots and he can post up, hit the 3 as well as the mid range. Getting rid of him would destroy this team’s chemistry.
Posted on 12/20/23 at 2:13 pm to Pels_Yaz
Only way Allen would make sense is if JV is asking for 20+million on an extension.
Otherwise we need to roll with JV

What exactly does that mean? Does that include the times he comes over to help because a guy (think Zion or BI) has been beaten off the dribble and he has no realistic shot of stopping the basket. All these stats lack context. I watch the games and this year JV has been better than he has ever been as a Pelican at defending the rim. He’s certainly not Gobert, but to me he’s been pretty solid at it this year.
