re: The 2022 NBA Draft Prospects Discussion Thread

You don't draft someone to fill a need right now. this isn't the NFL draft. It's a huge success if he even makes it to a second contract with the same team, or is good enough to be traded for something better.
If you need a specific role filled, that's what free agency and trades are for, not the draft. The draft is way too unreliable.

I think current need is just a tiebreaker. It’s not like we would be reaching for him at #9 - I think you can make a good argument for Bennedict Mathurin as early as #5. So current need just breaks the tie between prospects in that tier such as Duren, Murray, etc.

To an extent you are right, but you still don’t blindly draft players based off nothing but your estimation of talent. If the 9th-11th best player plays your position if need, you absolutely pick him. You don’t pick Keegan Murray who plays a position you are loaded with because he “might” be better. If Mauthurin can give you what Murphy is giving you now it’s a win.

If we have the ability to draft Mauthurin you take it and run.
Length, Defense, Shooting.

He has some issues defensively. He has potential there but he has a questionable motor/focus on that side of the ball. But yeah at 10 or 9 I’ll take him.

He took it to Holmgren in the FIBA U19 final this summer 22 pts 8 rebs 8 blks. Got Jaden Ivey and Adam Miller a few times each.

He’s legit and has been for a couple of years. Dude would go number 1 this year easily. He’s struggled a bit this season so the hype around him got a little quiet but you see the potential.

Looks like he has 9 foot wingspan!

I think how Chet's body responds to an NBA season will help gauge what VW might be in for when he gets here. They have similar bodies and skillsets, while VW is two years younger.

I think VW is more comparable to Mobley than Chet. VW is already listed at at least 209(many sites have different weights for him) compared to Holmgren who is 195

Just looking at that one clip VW has a solid base for a skinny kid and looks like he could add decent weight. The thing that concerned me is he looked slow. He can still be a huge mismatch, but he seems more destined to be a very skilled center than a positionless unicorn.

Another example of Mathurin playing bad defense in this game against Houston. Last week Mathurin was flat footed and lethargic guarding his guy who had the ball in a tight game with a minute left which led to a easy layup, and now against Houston he ball watches and lets his guy get WIDE open for a game ending 3. As of now he really is not a good defender. I wouldn’t say he’s terrible and has no hope. But he needs to wake up on that end. Unless he balls out in the workouts this summer i think he’ll be available around 10.

Also, another dud for the great Chet when playing a good team

Eh, I wouldn't say that. He played great defense and was rebounding over guys much "bigger" than him. He didn't score much, but he did better in the second half offensively. But his defense and rebounding still showed.
Paolo had a huge game for Duke tonight. He's rising to the moment in the tourney.

Any thoughts on Ochai Agbaji?
He'd probably be a bit of a reach at 10 or whatever but I like what I've seen written about him. I know he's an accomplished senior which DG likes.

Not loving this Jaden Ivey game

Banchero's had the best tournament of any of the top guys. Everybody else has had at least one dud.

Definitely. Also watch for Ohio State guard Malaki Branham. He might shoot up some boards by draft night. A lot of sites have him in the 20s or 30s. 18 year old who shots well and practically ran Ohio states offense. Been watching his game highlights and I’m shocked he’s not talked about a lot

Just threw up a bad airball in the clutch. Might have to re-evaluate the post it note.
ETA: I get that they've been doing most of their work with the bigs so they're going down low but Ivey is running away from the ball Ben Simmons style the last couple possessions.
Finally hit a shot but might be too late
