and if he makes $8M next year instead of $2M, now you have 4 spots to fill with $4M, and one of those will be a 1st round pick that will make $3M
Is this looking at avoiding the tax next year? If so I don't think you can assume the goal will be tax avoidance. The team will either be good enough to justify the tax, or some major changes will happen, like trading BI, and it's hard to predict what role players will still be here and what value they will still have for the Pels.

We could pick up Jose’s option and still give him an extension after, it’s not one or the other.
I don't think we can do that with him, but i could be wrong. PPP contracts are something that happens with 1st round picks, not 2nd rounders or undrafted guys. Again, i could be wrong.
All i'm saying is Jose has himself to look after, and he's watching Herb get paid this year, and undrafted Austin Reaves get paid this year, and even Ayo Dosunmu got a 3/$21M deal this offseason. Jose is the next best player from the 2nd round/undrafted class, and he wants a new contract. Jose isn't Naji, and he's not Xavier Tillman. There are teams that would give Jose a multi year contract worth $8M/yr, and he's proven to us that he's an important part of our team, and he has been missed very much so during his time out. having a good backup PG is about as important as having that main bench scorer. They can change games for you, and Jose does that for us. He's not just a replaceable end of bench guy like Naji is, even though i like Naji and i want to keep him on the team, but he's not going to get anything more than slightly over the minimum from any other team.
Lou Dort had a similar 4 year deal with OKC, and they gave him his new 5 year contract after year 3, even though they could have kept him for 1 more year at the minimum.
I look at it from Jose and his agents point of view and i can see them saying, either give us a new contract or don't keep us on for this 4th year and let us test the market. Jose has proven himself and i just think has the bargaining power to say that, assuming he has another great year this year. And the Pels don't have to release him and can keep him for the minimum one more year, but what i'm saying is that it won't be a good look from them if they were to keep someone like him from earning the money that he deserves, like everyone else from his draft class has already gotten. It just wouldn't be a good look to not give him a contract after this year, again, assuming he's still the difference maker he's proven to be in his first 2 years here.

correct. that was assuming to avoid the tax, which i agree, if this team performs well this year, then they are going to run it back and go into the tax next year, as i don't think there's any way around that.
I think this main core has 1.5 years to really prove something, b/c if Trey becomes what we hope he will, then he'll demand serious money and that will mean that one of CJ/BI/Zion has to go. And in 2 years BI will be making a lot more money as well, b/c if we do well this year, it will be b/c BI is playing at an all-star level, and he'll get a max extension this offseason, which is going to be massive, 4 years for $221M. At that point CJ can't be on this team for his final year of his contract with Trey and BI on new deals starting that final year of CJ's deal.
And to really start thinking about that now, it would be very difficult to dump CJ's contract in the offseason, even though it would be an expiring. It would be more likely to be traded mid season next year for an expiring that year.
For instance, next years deadline trade could be CJ for Ben Simmons. Simmons would expire after that year, and to be honest, i think would be an awesome replacement for Larry, and really for JV as well. I still think Ben Simmons would be a great starting center for us. Obviously not at $37M/yr, but at $10M/yr absolutely. I don't care what anyone says, he is the most versatile defender in the league, and i really don't think there's a close 2nd anymore with Draymond getting too old. When you're capable of matching up defensively with Steph and Lillard, as well as Jokic and Embiid, that's saying a lot, and there' no other guy in the league where you would say you're guarding Jokic tonight, or your guarding Steph tonight, and he can actually do it at a high level.

It's a misconception that Denver is average defensively
They were literally ranked 15th in defensive rating…

Now look at their defensive numbers in the playoffs when they play defense seriously.

Denver is a good defensive team, i don't think there's any debating that.
It's a lot easier for Jokic to step out and stop the 3 and leave the lane when you have 6'11" MPJ and 6'8" athletic freak Aaron Gordon left to protect the rim.
Murray and KCP aren't small guards, and both of them give great effort defensively, and Braun is the same way, and bigger than both of them.
Denver has no bench though. They have 7 guys that can play in the playoffs on their team, with maybe 2 more at most that might be able to. I mean they'll go through the regular season playing no more than 9 guys in a game their bench is that bad.
