Trey Murphy Propaganda Stat of the Day

Trey Murphy had the 4th best effective field goal percentage among non-centers last year.
2 of the 3 non-centers ahead of him? Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, probably 2 of the top 10 offensive players in the history of the NBA.
This was just his 2nd season in the league...

OK...let's get real...it's not rocket surgery. He's a follower of the Nate Oats' (& many others) "3&3" offensive philosophy. Which is: Basically shoot ONLY 3-pters & 3 footers. Your efg% will be quite nice.
Trey's efg% from last year:
From 3-pt line...61.2%...62.1% of his shots were from here
From 0-3'...75.9%...20.3% of his shots were from here
From 3-10'...49.5%...12.9% of his shots were from here
From 10-16'...18.8%...2% of his shots were from here
From 16-3-pt line...36.4%...2.8% of his shots were from here
Do the math...and somebody PLEASE show these numbers to BI.

Ok. Who is the third non center ahead of him?

Ingram does need to shoot more 3’s, but honestly his mid range game is very useful in the playoffs if we ever get there.
Nuanced offenses that score from all 3 levels tend to do better in the playoffs Vs the ones that just spray 3’a and pray.
I mean Hell, we actually saw this happen to Bama in college basketball during March Madness as well. They went cold from outside and an inferior team beat them.

Midrange is very necessary, mostly late in the shot clock. Just need more 3s and equally as important imo, more attacking at the rim from BI.
He can always get any Midrange shot he wants, so it makes sense to try and get the higher efficiency shot until later in the clock when you can fall back on the Midrange game.

i’m a Trey Murphy believer

Yep...always a place for a solid midrange shot...just PLEASE don't make it too much of a habit. I especially like any BI midrange shot over his 3-pt shot...on the final shot of the game...when down 1 point (G)
BTW: Another piece of worthless info...the MOST likely shots to be rebounded by the offensive team after a miss are:
You guessed it...
The missed 0-3' shot is #1
The missed 3-pt shot is #2 (those looong offensive rebounds add up...ask CJ)

Out of curiosity, where is this stat coming from?

Kenyon Martin Jr was #1 for non centers.

Great site. KMJ is a bit of an oddity for a high efg% guy...not a great 3-pt shooter but takes almost NO shots from...10-16' or 16-3-pt line...and he hammers that 0-3' at a tad over 80%. A bit odd for somebody only 6'6" or so.

Is this stat calculated differently everywhere? Every stat site has different rankings.

Probably just a case of sites having different "minimum standards" when it comes to "rankings". Number of required minutes played, shots taken...etc...in order to qualify for a particular ranking.

Yea he does a ton of cutting in the half court and rim running in transition. Obviously he’s not exactly a superstar so I left him out of OP for a reason lol. But I do think this reflects well on him and probably poorly on Houston, who let him go for a song.

Yea, the percentage itself shouldn’t change depending on the site unless garbage time has been filtered out (I believe Cleaning the Glass does this). But the Basketball Reference lists seems like it includes pretty much only starters and high minute bench guys, which I think is a good way to look at things.
Just a cool way to look at Trey’s production last year, really.

Trey will be the best player on this team in two years. Bookmark this shite.

I love Trey, but the only way that happens is if we trade BI and Zion and get underwhelming returns for them.

It’s an exciting thought for sure.
He’s a better young Robert Horry in theory. All Star potential. He’s going to benefit from 3 guys getting him the ball, too.
I see him as a better Rashard Lewis or even a Klay like role.

I wonder how many of these were a toe on the line.
