I've been pretty impressed with his progress this year. I'm at least not afraid of meltdown if he had to step in. If he had to takeover I would still be shooting for 8-8. Maybe better after he got some miles on him. For a pure backup I'd call that at least good enough.

His mobility is good. Long ball okay as pointed out. I'm not seeing any obvious miscommunications with the receivers. What is really sticking out to me (which is as much about the OL)is that it seems like every game he has 3-4 plays where he can stand flat footed in the pocket for what seems like forever.

FYI, Brees is just as tall.

Exactly. The height argument is completely absurd.

Not really. He played pretty well.

His stats against 3rd stringers is one thing but I didn't like how you had the comparison to brees as if that made his play appear better.

So you think I'm saying he's better than Brees? Get a grip.

He's played better than expected, but whether that makes him "good" or not is an open question.

JaMarcus Russell is also tall. Great quarterback.

To be fair, if any teams #1 QB goes down, that team is in trouble...

QB is clearly the top spot on the field. Good teams have good QBs and bad teams don't.

What I see is he can go through a progression. Obviously, Brees has a lot to do with him learning that. As far as a nice pocket QB, his physical tools don't have to blow you away if he can read the defense.

He drops back well, sometimes he can sit back there forever, and if he feels pressure he can stand in, step up and take the hit. I'm definitely a lot more comfortable with him backing up Brees after this preseason.

And still...if Brees does get hurt, Daniel still will have QB1 in his ear and helping him on the sidelines.

I am only 5'7 so I guess I still go with just as tall.

I am about 5-10 but I was just as tall if not taller than Drew, so I should start saying I am 6'1.

If we he was that good he'd be a starter. He's progressed very nicely under Breesus and he could keep this offense moving for a few games if Brees goes down. Of course we won't win the Super Bowl with him (just yet), but he's sure as hell a lot better than most backups.

It seems many here want to have a stud backup just to move him out for a draft pic. Kinda funny really.

I think in the short term 3-4 games.....depending on the matchup Daniel would be serviceable and probably pretty decent with the talent around him.

Chase Daniel is a serviceable enough backup to get you thru any game Drew goes down.

However, if Drew goes down and is out for any length of time, I don't see how they don't go out and acquire somebody w/ starting experience in the NFL either via trade, or street free agency.

Chase leads all QBs in passing yards in the preseason

i think we can still make the playoffs with him. Our offense is more about the system than the QB. As long as Chase's decision making was good we would be in every game.

Biggest difference being that hopefully with Drew, we will get early and often leads taking immense pressure off of our Defense. If chase is starting, it also changes the dynamic of our defensive approach as well. I hope we begin to stop the run a lot better than what we've shown in preseason.
