I was at that game.
Why was the Tulane Stadium grass field always in such terrible shape in the late 60s / early 70s?
Every Saints video Ive ever seen its basically like this disgusting soggy painted mud. I wonder if the stadium had insufficient drainage or something from its initial construction.

AI is amazing.. my query yielded the following result.

1. The Sugar Plantation Connection
Tulane Stadium was built in 1926 on the site of the Etienne de Boré plantation, the exact spot where sugar was first granulated in Louisiana. While historically cool, the soil was basically a low-lying sediment "bed of mud".
While it sounds like a Zoomer tall tale, the practice of "painting the dirt" was common in the NFL before artificial turf became standard. Groundskeepers used green lead-based paint or dye to make worn-out, muddy patches look like lush grass for the new colour television broadcasts.

Tulane and the Saints both played on it and the drainage and maintenance were very basic compared to what we have in Tiger Stadium today.

They switched to artificial turf the next season and had turf the rest of its time. Remember, grass upkeep in those days was not what it is now, so all it took was one rainstorm and that was that for the season, especially with 2 teams using the field.

And the home team Saints painted one of the end zones with 49’s logo and colors. They dint do that anymore, anywhere.

1st Abramowitz (sp)- Read his book. It’s awesome
2nd- notice that no one was laying on the ground hurt after the plays are over?
