I was hoping they could explain themselves

agreed. I should've posited in the OP the flip side too for those who want Payton gone at all costs

Because I was a fan before 2006. Because I remember Hasllett and Ditka and Mora. Because I know it's hard to win consistently in the NFL and I realize we are in the middle of a rebuild. Because there isn't a better option for the Saints as far as head coach goes right now. Because I don't overreact like a lot of crazy arse posters on this website every time we lose a game.

Very few claim SP is the best or irreplaceable. Most say we are better, near term, with him than without.

You must've missed where ZombieKid said Payton is a "top 3 coach... easily". You must've also missed where you "boomed" his post asking me to list who could replace him. Thanks for playing

1) Very few = One, yep I'm good with where I stand.

2) I think your list has been debunked by as many as 10 or 12 other posters so I won't even bother. But of the ones who may be equal to SP in ability, not a single one is available.

AGAIN..... THANK CHRIST YOU ARE NOT IN CHARGE.

And PLEASE, stop being a moron every time you post.

exacto Chad, fear of the unknown. I'm kinda like MDS, can see a case made either way.

He is at a juncture that reminds me of the end of Shanahan in Denver. 2009-11 was a golden era at 37-11, 2012-15 pace (32-32 with three 7-9s) cannot go on regardless of his past successes.

He is still a brilliant offensive mind. Hazlett was a good DC but poor HC. He needs a big win selecting the new DC to continue. Bad defenses one thing, alltime worst in the NFL is another. Don't even ask me how many years ago STC McMahon should have been gone.

2-3 disagreeing with me =/= "10 or 12" "debunked"

Why? What did I state that I would do if in charge? I must've missed that one.

I personally think its a fear of the unknown. You could let him walk and get a better coach, but your odds are better you find a worse one. I think this teams struggles have been more attributed to poor drafts and FA signings and less to do with coaching.

There really might not be 10 mediocre-good coaches in the NFL. I'd say if you're 15th you're probably damn near a bad coach

And reason enters the discussion. All of this sums up my thinking

That's a fair point. I don't fully agree with it, but it's fair.

For me it's a fear that we don't have strong ownership that's committed to this team if Payton were to leave.

Why all the love?

Let's see.....he assembled the best team we've EVER had....he is THE BEST COACH WE'VE EVER HAD, and HE BROUGHT THE LOMBARDI TO NEW ORLEANS....

I'm not saying he's irreplaceable, but that's why "all the love". I don't think it's rocket science.

I'm not angry. I actually think he's using the current NFL coaching carousel to his full advantage. He's in a position of leverage.

I also think he's best qualified to rebuild here....if not him, then who?

He's severely underachieved given that he's had a healthy top 5 quarterback in NFL history and had the luxury of playing in a relatively weak division for the past 10 years.

3 measly division titles (less than Ryan/Falcons and Newton/Panthers in the past 7 years)? 2 NFCCG's and none since 2009? 1 Super Bowl appearance? Really bad job of taking advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime talent like Brees.

He's beneath slightly above average guys like Tomlin and Mike McCarthy and (gag) Tony Dungy and certainly beneath Pete Carroll and Bellichick and Coughlin.

Everything I said is factual and undeniable. We're the most underachieving franchise in the NFL these past 10 years given the talent on our roster, the ceiling that we so rarely reached, and the weak competition that we repeatedly failed to take advantage of.

TWO fricking first round bye in 10 years with that talent? TWO?!?!

Considering that the previous 2 seasons have been 7-9 finishes (those records are better than the actual teams),

You answered your own question. If they have a better record than the players on the field afford you, it's because of coaching. He needs to improve on his draft picks, last year was a step in the right direction, and replace his buddies. He does that and we are in playoffs next year.
