He can retire at any point basically. What he can't do is quit and go to another team. There doesn't have to be an opt-out clause. He just can't work as a football coach unless the team releases him from his contract. The Saints would be stupid to do that.
If he wants to coach anywhere in the next 3 years, that team will have to compensate the Saints. Further, the Saints may have the legal right (depending on the language of the contract) to roll over those years. This is less likely as I doubt he signed a contract with that language, but its possible.
In the end, he could start coaching again without any stipulations in 2025.

No
It was a broken contract
Unlikely since retirement is covered in the NFL rules and probably in the contract verbiage.

He quit
He retired, like people working under an employment contract do all the time. Usually they get some sort of going away party and possibly a parting gift, unlike when they quit.

I believe he had an opt out clause in his contract that he exercised. Payton didn't do anything that Gayle didn't back 100%.
Standard employment agreements cover retirement, so I sincerely doubt he’s breaching his contract.

The truth is the game was starting to pass him by. Another year removed from it and he’ll be further removed. His next stint as a coach won’t come with the same success.

So wait forgive me but if Payton gets the itch in 2 years and Jerry Jones wants to make him the highest paid coach in football history, we won't get any compensation by way of draft picks?

That was before his was busted for stealing drugs and chasing women and getting suspended for an entire season, the first time in the history of the NFL
The Giants also took his play calling responsibilities away from him.
I’m disappointed you are aware of the history of the Giants organization
You better than this brod

His clit gets throbs everytime he reads the name Sean Payton.
My clit will get throbs when the Saints win another SuperBowl without Sean Payton
Who had four 7-9 seasons after our SuperBowl win
And couldn’t win a second one with a HOF QB and the top three in the league.
He quit
And will never win another SuperBowl with any other team.
Quiters don’t win championships
And little brod, what would you know about clits anyway?
Seems like you prefer sean Payton’s arse
What does it taste like?
I’m sure many posters on this board would love to know.

Giants quarterback Kerry Collins offered strong support for demoted offensive coordinator Sean Payton, who no longer will call plays this season. Collins said the demotion makes it appear that Payton is the scapegoat for the Giants’ offensive woes.
“It looks like he’s taking the fall for the whole thing,” Collins said. “I said this to the offense [Wednesday], ‘We’re the ones who step out on that field, we’re the ones whose job it is to execute, and we’re not doing it good enough. Whether it’s interceptions, fumbles, penalties mistakes, whatever.’
“And I said, ‘I don’t want one person in here to say, ‘Well, Sean was the reason,’ ” continued Collins. “Sean wasn’t the reason. That’s on us as players. Hey [coach] Jim [Fassel] made his decision and we’re going to move forward with it but I hate that it looks like Sean’s being the scapegoat of the whole thing, because he’s not. They were right there with me.”

Yes, we all know you have a vag yet you aren't even a Saints fan.

HOF coaches Bud Grant & Marv Levy couldn't win one Super Bowl with Hall of Fame QBs. Together they lost a total of 8 Super Bowls combined.

There's no such thing once a person has been an employee for 16 years.

And will never win another SuperBowl with any other team.
True because he may never coach again like Jimmy Johnson when left the Dolphins or Bill Cowher when he left the Steelers.

Payton has won a Super Bowl & multiple NFC South titles. What's your opinion on Bill Walsh & Bill Cowher?

Yeah I don’t get the hate. Payton was here for 16 years. It’s not like he bounced after a few years. I’m my opinion a lot of this goes back to Saban and LSU. The situations are not in any way similar.

Just as long as he knows we want picks and an elite player from wherever he goes. Probably Dallas.
Micah Parsons would look good in black and gold.

That's the thing. You don't seem to realize payton's greatness wasn't just about his offensive mind, it was everything else.
It was what phrases he used for the theme of the year. The way he got along with the players.
Posted on 3/13/22 at 1:39 pm to Eman5805
It all depends how how long he stays out. If it’s just this year then a team has to give us competition for 2 years on his contract which I would imagine be a 1st and 3rd or a younger player with promise. If he sits 2 years then the compensation is for just one year and i would say the very best would be a 1st round pick but more likely a 2nd and maybe a 4th or 5th.

You have the mindset of a loser.
And your responses are ridiculous.
I give zero fricks about any teams or coaches you mentioned.
I’m a Saints fan.

He really believed Taysom Hill was the next Steve Young
And paid him as if he was
He fricked us

Of course he will. Coaching is one hell of a grind, it's not unreasonable to need a break after 16 years. Alot of coaches have done it, apparently it hard to stay away from, too. Cowher is the only one that comes to mind that I feel still had gas in the tank and stayed out.
