. On the surface it is also very underwhelming to use our top pick the last 2 drafts on an interior linemen which are typically some of the least valued positions in the draft as a whole.

More value than LBs

So you are saying typically there are more centers and guards drafted in the first round than linebackers?

ETA with stats from 1st round picks:

2020 - 3 linebackers before first I-OL. 5 linebackers to 1 interior OL
2019 - 4 linebackers taken before any guards or centers. 4 linebackers in first round vs 2 interior OL
2018 - 1 linebacker before IOL. 5 linebackers to 1 interior OL

Do I need to get more draft data?

early LBs bust a hell of a lot more often

LB is the new RB, just think of it that way. in a few years people will flip about over-drafting LBs

What is the bust rate differential for a LB early versus a LB in middle rounds versus an interior O-linemen early versus mid round? This is obviously rhetorical but you cannot make that decision based solely on what busts more. I also don't see any stats backing up your bust probabilities.

You simply cannot argue that interior OL is a much less valued position in the draft than LB and many other positions. The only positions that compete with IOL are safeties and tight ends (and maybe RBs certain years). It is also important this should be on a draft / starter or roster spots basis not absolute. Hard to compare IOL vs TE when you start more IOL than TEs.

Look at the 10 year sample for 1st round picks

G and C have 2 of the top 3 best bust/pro bowl difference

G and C have the lowest bust rate of any position

I can get behind those numbers, but while we are at it LB's fared pretty dang well. So drafting either looks good on paper.

LB or Interior Oline was the pick given the Saints needs, and I'm okay with what the Saints did. So long as they can figure out what to do with a reshuffling/trade/release of Warford and/or Easton.

That article is from 2015. Wonder how the last 5 years would impact it. The 25 year data showed LB just as good or better than G/C but in the 10 year data it did not fare as well. I only really looked at 1st round and not top10/25 since we weren't picking there.

Really good article though.

You clearly don’t value interior OL very much and that’s fine but I’m sorry to say you are very wrong. Ask any QB what can alter a game quicker than anything else and 99% of the time they will say pressure up the middle in their face. If a QB can’t climb the pocket to make his throws you won’t be successful. LB is important but a strong DL can make LBs jobs a lot easier and we posses one of the deepest DL in the NFL along with the best weak side LB in football.

You guys are on some coocoo shite. The Saints would be lucky to get a 4th for Warford, much less a 3rd or even...2 seconds, which is asinine.

This is what I really don’t get.

I mean Ruiz seems like a fine choice if we trade Warford.

But I thought Warford has played mostly well. He’s made 3 straight probowls. And only 28

Saints plans may be bigger than that, getting an extra 8.5 mil in cap space by trading Warford would allow them to possibly extend Kamara or do some other move (trade) that requires cap space.
My preference would be Warford plus our 4th or 5th this year or our 3rd round pick next year for one of Seattle 2nd's.

Agreed and this is exactly something the saints would do. I SEENT IT.

I wanted a LB but it wasn't a bad pick.
Me too, They were all set to grab Murray and the fricking Chargers does it to them. lol The bastards, Murray will be a great pro, kid has all the tools, he relentless from sideline to sideline and great LB size at 6'2 - 245. He would have been great with Demario and Anzalone returning.

They can still get Baun. If we get him and a WR, this is an A draft

Baun expects to get drafted really soon after the 2nd round starts.

Exactly why I wouldn't have taken brooks at 24
If it isn't a 3 down linebacker who can cover, you don't waste a 1st on them

I don't see much of any dropoff from Murray to Queen.
There is, Queen did come on in the second half of the season and improve his stock a lot, and I'm happy for him. But this Murray kid has been a beast of a LB'er throughout his Okie career. That's why the Chargers traded up giving up 2 picks in the process to swap places to jump in front of the Saints to take him, they knew the Saints were about to take him.
