Top 15 first round picks should always be QB, WR, LT, DE, or CB.

You can control the contract for five years and those are the five most premium and therefore expensive positions.

Between those positions you have eight starting slots to fill.

It is cheaper to sign a good guard or safety than LT or CB.

Saving cap space on the fringes is what elite teams do.

Can't really say "always" here. There was a time where teams were getting criticism for taking WRs or CBs that high, and not RBs.

If you are going off of contract value only, then you also have to consider the interior Dline and RTs as well as their values are right there. Quick look at top 5 average contracts on OTC:
QB - $56M
Edge - $42.5M
WR - $35.5M
CB - $28M
LT - $27.7M
IDL - $26.8M
RT - $25.1M
LG - $22.3M
S - $20.9M
RG - $20.1M
LB - $17.6M
C - $17.4M*
RB - $16.6M
TE - $15.9M

*Will have to watch how Linderbaum's contract impacts all 3 interior oline positions. Remove his contract from the top 5, and the average drops from $17.4M to $14.4M. And he's now the 6th highest paid offensive lineman. Does this mean we will start seeing Center contract's surging? How will a surge in contracts amongst centers impact the guard contracts? How do the guard contracts? Before Linderbaum signed, the highest paid center was the 11th highest paid iOL.

I guess I must spell it out for some fans. Trade down three spots if you find a team that wants the 8th pick that they are willing to trade their 11th pick, and a late rounder to move up. I don't believe the Saints want LSU's cornerback at 8th. Vega will be a star for many years.

If you are willing to pick someone at 11, why would you not grab them at 8? Trading back saves less than $1M a year, and now you risk 3 slots grabbing the guy you wanted? Now, if there are 2-3 guys that you value equivalently, then going back a few spots would make sense.

Also, the 11th spot is not an ideal trading partner. Miami currently has the 11th spot and based on their offseason moves they are more inclined to trade back to pick up more picks; than they are to spend a 3rd (and maybe a 5th) to move up 3 spots.

You make it sound so easy. There has to be a willing party. Even if you do trade back it isn't like their isn't other variables that can derail your plans. This ain't Madden.

Based on value, trading back two or three spots only nets you a 3rd round pick, or maybe a future 2nd. And you aren’t taking into account opportunity loss of missing out on a guy like Styles or Love.

I don’t like picking guards in the first. Only tackles deserve that. I agree we do need to load up on defense. Safety is a priority and this draft has solid ones.

I agree, if Skyles or Love is there at eight then you make that pick. If not, and you find a team willing to trade up, and you believe Vega will still be available. I'd would make the trade. Picking up a third, or a fourth rounder is damn good value to move down three spots. I don't trust the body type of the Miami edge rusher. Everyone knows that the d-tackle may be more valuable in todays game because QB's are getting rid of the ball ASAP. Tackles are closer to the QB than the edge. This makes Vega the pick for me. #51 for the Saints is the weakest player on the team. He needs to be replaced.
