He had almost 3 1k rushing seasons.

Not a HOF talent though

I would have loved to see him used in the slot as a wr. I think he would have been great as a slot wr. That being said I will always have much respect for Reggie. He had some plays in the 2009 playoffs and SB that really helped the team win. Also in 2006 I believe he returned a punt for a td in the first game back in the dome after Katrina (the Gleason game)

In what offense, on what team, would he have been better suited?

He was never going to be a pound and ground RB. He was a system player. He was a good fit for Pete Carroll's system at USC, and he was a good fit for CSP's system here. If he would have stayed, as CSP perfected this kind of offense, he would have had a very productive career.

nah

there were plenty of receiving tailbacks before reggie. guys like brian westbrook, charlie garner, marshall faulk etc. westbrook and garner are probably good comps because those two offenses were in line with what payton brought to new orleans. he has a lot of overlap with gruden and andy reid because they all generally coached under the same peope coming up

Very true. However, Payton reinvented the all-purpose back mentality with Marshall Faulk. People tend to forget that Payton has ties to Marshall Faulk when he was at San Diego State. Payton had a huge influence in the offensive game plan there, it actually propelled him into his first OC gig at Miami Ohio.

quote:

In Faulk's junior season in 1993, he was finally able to showcase his all-purpose ability by catching 47 passes for 640 yards and 3 touchdowns to go with 1,530 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground. These numbers put Faulk 3rd in the nation in all-purpose yardage that year, and 2nd in scoring. Faulk left San Diego State University with many of the school's offensive records, among them 5,562 all-purpose yards and 62 career touchdowns, which is the 8th most in NCAA history.

Reggie was in the perfect system for his skill set. Problem is, lateral speed on offense in the NFL means much less every year. Linebackers today are much more nimble than they used to be. FWIW, I don't think the Saints win it all in 2009 without Reggie.

WAIT... you are kidding me right? He rushed for 418 yards per year for 5 years on the saints... The next three years he rushed for an average of 1026 years on other teams. I think you Saints fans have created some kind of fantasy of Reggie bush.... During his prime years too. kinda wasted.

Had he been drafted to another team he would have without a doubt had a much better career. Not HOF but probably hall of good

Reggie was too ahead of his time. His role was created out of thin air by Payton and he was the first running back to be used like that.

Reggie is the most underrated Saint in the Payton era. In fact I don’t think his loss was fully replaced until Kamara.

If Sean couldnt get the best out of Reggie...how many coaches do you think could considering what Sean did with Pierre, Ivory, Kamara, Khiry, and Sproles

Didn't Reggie average like 3.5 yards per rush in his first few seasons under Sean? He started pushing past the 4 ypc mark only towards the end of his time with the Saints and only really after he left the team and went on to play with the Dolphins and the Lions. Maybe Sean is just a better coach now, than when he drafted Reggie?

What he did for the city after Katrina was more important than what he did on the field.

He had almost 10,000 yards between running, passing, and returns. And he was more successful as a RB after he left here. HoF if he wasn’t ever here- I don’t know. But a pretty successful career.

I’m glad they inducted him in the Saints HOF at least. He wasn’t Barry or Kamara, but he was an electric player and fun to watch. He won us some games and we don’t win the Super Bowl without him imo...until Feb 2020 of course

More importantly, he was a majorly positive influence involved in local communities in the post Katrina years. New Orleans has much to thank Reggie for and he’s always been a class act, so it’s a well deserved honor

Saints probably don't win a SB without him, so it's not a fantasy.

I mean, the Saints wouldn't have won the Super Bowl without him contributing to the team. His problem was he couldn't stay healthy with the Saints.
