Miami would be fairly inexpensive

You have it backwards. You don't go to someplace hotter during the summer. You go to the mountains or something.

We will stay at The Grand Hyatt Kauai, same as last year. I want to retire in Kauai, especialy if I can bribe somebody at The Hyatt to let me use those INSANELY PERFECT pools. I love the slow pace of the Poipu area.
I think Mexico would be the best bet for a family vacation, especially with the airfare credit. I appreciate the suggestions. I really just need to find a family-style resort with water activities included so I'll start looking at the cities you suggested. It would be a big deal for the kids to leave the country.
Rondo actually does have pics of my wife

Our other options were Boulder (lived there 10 years) and Vancouver/Whistler (best NA mountain spot imho). But everybody wants a beach, so beach it is. They want to swim, snorkel and drink smoothies. That's how kids roll.

We do Mexico twice a year with the kids. We have stayed in both playa del carmen and puerto aventuras. You fly into CUN. On united it's a quick trip through IAH. Puerto aventuras is a gated marina town. They have some very nice houses on the rocky coast that we have rented with access to sandy beach through omni hotel. They have allowed access as long as ur tipping and eating/drinking. Some houses have omni access cards where they give u towels and a discount. Check vrbo.com for those. PA is an Extremely safe golf cart community I would feel comfortable letting my older kid run around alone in. Good diving too with dive aventuras at the omni hotel. In playa we have stayed at condo hotels properties. Search condo hotels in playa del carmen. I do not do regular hotels with 2 kids and most don't have large suites available. So a condo hotel is a full service option where you can get 2,3 bedrooms in a fairly nice setting. There are some other nice resorts along that coast like banyan Mayakoba, grand vellas etc. Check oyster.com and research maya riviera area. Very good seemingly unbiased hotel reviews on thhat site. Cancun is a little too party for our kids so these are good options.

I've seen $400-$500 flights to Lima out of IAH in the past.
Don't know if you want to bring kids to Peru though.

When in Poipu, make the the trip to da crack for their fish tacos, amazing. I used to stay at the Villas at Poipu Kai. The Hyatt is the top property on the island after st Regis princeville, well done sir!
Ever gone into Koloa town to the fish market? The poke is amazing.

think smaller places like Merida
No beaches around Merida, except Progreso. Not a place you really want to go...
