Got my wife the 4wd. Like they previously said, gas mileage really isn't different.Resale is much better, and we have needed to use it a few times on slippery boat ramps and in the mud or snow. I wouldn't get one without it. If I wanted 2wd I would have gotten the highlander.

Not sure what kind of wheel drive it was, but our 4 runner was a 1998 model and my daughter is still driving it with no problems.

4wd vehicles never fall through a bottom price point. I bought a 4wd 4runner with 160k for 5400. At 210k, it's worth a little more than that. The 2wd have further depreciated.

An equivalent but 2wd 160k mile 4Runner would have been cheaper to buy than yours though. Stop comparing apples to oranges. The 2wds hold their value just as well, they just start with a lower value. It's really not hard to figure out

Tell yourself whatever you need to tell yourself to justify the additional expense. But you're not "making profit" by buying 4wd if you don't need it. Any marginal additional value you might have gained will be eaten up by increased fuel consumption, maintenance costs, etc.

If you need 4wd, get it. If you don't, don't.

I can’t believe they don’t offer the V8, anymore.

I always say that if you ever think you may need 4wd, it will pay for itself that one time you may need it. As others have said what you pay on the front end is usually made up 100% on the back end

Yeah, it costs more and may prove to be an unnecessary expense, but same can be said about sun roofs, heated seats, etc. you may never use those features and the utility/cost is much lower for those types of features than 4wd is

Now, if you would really realistically never use it, probably better to skip it. That being said I’m not sure if the 4Runner is awd or 4wd. They serve different purpose

Ford GT is a v6 now. Its the world we live in.
The new v6 is more powerful than the V8 and weighs much less. If you need a v8 in it you really should have the sequoia...

Negative. It's time dependent.

There are parts in the vehicles' lifespan where the 2wd will actually be worth more. A lot of people are hesitant to buy 100-150k 4x4s for fear that they've been beat. Later on, with Toyota's, Nissan, and Suzuki, the 4x4 value holds firm at 5-6k no matter what.

Old Japanese 4x4s that run are almost never below 3k. No matter what.

I realize my usage and the length of time is not typical, I'm just saying there comes a point where that 1800 dollar pot in can make the vehicle worth 2-3k more.

As for the maintenance and fuel savings, what maintenance? A transfer case fluid swap every 100k? As for mpg, in the real world, it's negligible.

It's not, but OK.

Nope.

Which is about $2k more than the 2wd will be. Guess how much extra 4wd costs a new one...

Old 2wd 4runners are almost never below $2k, so you're really not making much of a point there

Negligible because it hurts your argument Classic.

4WD. I have a 2017 T4R and have only put it in 4WD a handful of times but it was sure nice having the option. Saved my arse several calls to a tow company or a baw.

Truck nut crew will say otherwise but 4WD is not needed for city life, plus the 2WD I believe gets slightly better MPG.

Buy the 95-97 80 series. The ‘91-94 have a dog of a motor. And try to find one with factory lockers

Buy many used 4x4 vehicles between 5-10k?

Very true, but I’d like to think if the newer ones came with a V8 it would have more than the old one did (as the new V6 does, like you’ve mentioned).

But I don’t need a V8, I have a full size truck for pulling. Just would have been nicer to have more power in the 4Runner.

What’s a TRD supercharger cost?? I’m sure my wife would like it.

What does that have to do with anything? 4wds cost more upfront, and they cost more later. That's not earth shattering.

LNCHBOX is pretty well versed in 4x4 world. I wouldn't try to check him. I own a 4x4 4runner and haven't found an issue with anything he's posted.

I’ll never drive another car without all wheel drive. It’s a total game changer. The car handles so much better. Well worth the money

If its for family and you live in Louisiana I think 2wd is fine. You've had your snowstorm for the decade

10 mpg is the biggest downside of them, but they are beautiful and badass. Also really hard to find because people hold on to them forever
