Like someone else mentioned, it takes spots from marching bands

That's not the way it is. As I posted a few weeks ago in the thread on the Mande Milkshakers,

1. Less bands are marching these days for various reasons. Safety in the large New Orleans crowds is one reason stated in the past. Money is another-- while the school bands (not the students) ARE paid, marching in a Mardi Gras parade is not a moneymaker for the schools. Transportation is expensive, as is the cleaning of band uniforms after parade season. And, less kids are taking band at school in general.

2. In New Orleans, the ONLY parade left that parades with its own time slot and its own route is Endymion on Saturday night. On any other parade day or night you have multiple parades, one after the other (from Oshun/Cleopatra on Friday night to Zulu/Rex on Mardi Gras Day). On Saturday, February 7th, Uptown has SIX (6) parades along St. Charles. There are only so many school marching bands to go around, and they can only march so much or so often. New Orleans parades are required to have a certain number of marching units; these marching groups are filling the gap, not pushing kid's bands out of the way.

Apparently, you haven't seen the Baton Rouge version, The Golden Guys.

610 Stompers seem like mostly cool guys you’d have a beer and shoot the shite with.

The Golden Guys seems like it’s a get together to just have a sausage love fest after. I actually recognize a few in those photos and they definitely love to smoke poles. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

In fairness, that is about 90% of anyone over the age of 30 in the South.

You a homophobe or something?

It's Mardi Gras. Maybe, you don't understand Mardi Gras or folks wanting to have fun even if it is something you would not do!

Yeah, but the Sophisticats are actually kind of cool. They don't have dance routines, or "flash mobs" inside of bars or have this overly inflated ego. They walk in every Houma parade and hand out roses to chicks and little kids.

As much as I think the schtick is played out, I thought it was funny in the beginning but everything needs to come to an end. However, if they are raising money for charity then I'll give them a pass. I also knew some original stompers who are good guys. Typical New Orleans boys who are a little pretentious but have big hearts.

Went to Carrolton parade the other day. There were at least 6-8 different womens versions of the 610 Stompers.

Mostly older and almost all of them past thicc.

Once upon a time it played as a fun joke- somewhere they crossed over to being far too serious.

jumped the shark is a great way to put it. when they first started it was funny and novel.... but like with everything people take it an run to an intense direction with it. Now the dudes have hierarchy patches sewn onto their uniform...some arent even dancing just present... some walk the parade route just wearing their jacket. shite happens that way.... something gets attention.. the members think it's cool and take it to stupid places that in their head is really cool but have totally lost the original mark

My friend who moved out of state was at Carrollton/Arthur with me last week. It's been 10-12 years since he's been to a parade. The one thing he said was "there's a lot more middle aged and elderly women dancing these days. And not well"

Houma has their own Men’s Group called Selucrey. It is Hercules spelled backwards with a y replacing the H.
A reasonable person would pronounce the spelling of “Hercules” backwards (Selucreh) about the same as they would pronounce “Selucrey”.*

Houma backwards remains exactly Houma.
