I suffer from this, too. So much so that I think I started a similar thread on here years ago. I’ve learned to stay away from mixed drinks and to keep to whiskey and beer. When it hits, I get flushed, clammy, and intense gut cramps. Have no Asian ancestry that I know about.

I hav a relative that has that happen to her. It happens to her regardless of the type of alcohol she drinks. After just a couple of sips her symptoms are exactly as you describe.

Wondering if a daily allergy pill might help out, or taking Zantac before a night of drinking could help. Seems if you can block the histamine-2, you can somewhat prevent the flushing and burning. Anyone else suffer from this?
The correct answer is to take a Pepcid (famotidine) 20 mg before drinking. You can take it twice a day if needed also. I habe the same reaction to alcohol, but only if I have eaten recently or eat during drinking.
I believe it's caused from not being able to process alcohol dehydrogenase which is the by product of breaking down alcohol. Don't know the long term negative effects though.

That started happening to me around 31, just randomly one day at a brewery got really really red, nose clogged, tunnel vision, and it's continued since then. Over time it's gotten less severe but it still happens. I have yet to find a cure or cause. Nothing I've tried has worked in stopping it save sobriety. I have noticed that after an hour or so the symptoms revert (or I stop noticing them) so there's that.

Anyone ever taken antibuse and drank anyway? I did.
We used to say that was the closest thing to SEAL training the USAF offered.

I haven’t a clue what you are talking about.

Same thing happens to me when I drink dark spiced rum.

Merlots and Prosecco does this to me. I take a Zyrtec and it helps. Did you drink heavily the night before this happened as well?

Ask your boyfriend to find your regular go-to and stick with it-

Maybe it’s a sign you shouldn’t be drinking at all given you are considering taking a medication in order to drink.

The hard way
That’s what I did. I didn’t take it one morning and waited until the next day. Picked up some liquor. Thought I was gonna die. On my hands and knees in the bathroom about 2 sips off the bottle in.
It was terrible. I actually guess I did it twice because once I waited 3 days and then got a drink on an airplane (fricking idiot, I am), drank about half of it and it started hitting me again amd I stopped eight there. I don’t know how long that antibuse stays in your system, but it’s at least 3 days.

I went to school with a guy from Thailand that was allergic to alcohol. He'd have two drinks and turn beat red. He drank like a fish.
When I did drink, I've had a few negative reactions. Mostly red wines, but happened a couple of other times as well. We weren't sure if it was the alcohol or the tannins in the wine. Nevertheless, it was one of the many reasons I haven't had a drink in years.

Take a 100mg niacin tablet then gulp the 1800 Silver Tequila. Guarantee you light up like a flare! But.....immune building has to start somewhere. Thank me later.

When I drank natty light in college (notmally keg beer) I would immediately have pollen-like allergy symptoms.

My father in law, always said he was allergic to Alcohol. For the longest time I thought he was just full of it because I was ignorant. I never did see that man drink.
He grow up country and never tried drinking till he was 18 in Vietnam and trying to blow off steam. No trace of Asian in his family history and his brother was a helluva drinker so I don't think it was based on his family history.
Long story short the symptoms he described when he tried to drink were a little more severe then your symptoms, but the only solution he ever came up with was not to drink and he never did.

Do you have Asian ancestry (even slight)?
Posted on 10/19/20 at 9:32 am to SEC. 593
I have never heard of this Asian genetic ties to alcohol allergies. You learn something new every day I guess.
Posted on 10/19/20 at 9:40 am to fallguy_1978
It's a genetic disorder where they don't have a proper liver enzyme Alcohol Dehydrogenase and Alcohol Dehydrogenase 2.
Its not a allergy, but an intolerance due to genetics. It doesn't just effect Asians, but it's the most prevelant group it's found in.
The first enzyme converts ethanol to
Acetaldehyde, which is toxic, and the 2nd enzyme converts Acetaldehyde to acetic acid which isn't. The build-up of Acetaldehyde is what causes the redding and sickness.
