Definitely 100% NOT a copperhead
98.6% sure it’s a Northern watersnake

My son who is an expert in snake identifying snakes (8 year old) says it’s a gaboon pit viper or a copperhead .

The skin markings are similar to a copperhead but the head is somewhat rounded. The copperheads I’ve dealt with have a more triangular shaped head.

FYI, if you want to kill a snake you’re better off chopping off its head and not it’s tail.

I agree with the poster who said it is a water snake. It does not appear to be a copperhead. Head shape is wrong, color is wrong.
My dog whacks a lot of copperheads (damn good snake dog) and that doesn't look like one.
Northern Water Snake:
It would be nice if people would provide information about the size of the snake and whether it was found close to water.

The only good snake is a dead snake.

Harmless(certainly now!) water snake.

Markings closer to head resemble a copperhead, closer to tail resembles a canebrake(rattle missing?). Head looks too rounded for a viper though. What general area of the country is your garage located in?
Edit: I don’t think it’s a copperhead, but copperheads can be tricky to identify. For example:

Not a copperhead. Copperheads have hourglass shaped bands with the center of the hourglass (narrow part) always being along the centerline/top of the back. The snake in the photo has the thick part of hourglass shape on the top of the back. It looks similar to a copperhead at first glance, but that’s the purpose of mimicry.

Doesn’t really look like a copperhead to me based on the head, but your photo is blurry. Reference:
