I like art deco in small doses, bit I think that's perfect, because that's what makes it special.

A haiku:
Art Deco designs
Made architecture art: now,
Buildings are boxes

That McDonald's seems to me to have a pretty strong Art Deco influence. It's been bastardized and commoditized, but it's there
The McDonald’s is definitely Art Deco, it’s just modern Art Deco.
Buildings, art, decoration, all that stuff evolves over time. It starts to look dated, people get used to the same stuff over and over again and get sick of it, and change it up. Beethoven and Chopin don’t make the top 40 on Billboard like they would’ve in the 1700s-1800s. 100 years from now they’ll be saying we should go back to the modernized looking buildings from today.

No… modern architecture is premised on the rejection of beauty. It’s usually very cold and alienating. It is probably a window into how we feel, but it won’t last as a movement. We don’t keep ugly buildings long term, and it’s hard to imagine people feeling nostalgia for them, for the same reason.
What I think makes Art Deco so interesting, is that it’s the last (?) major movement that embraced the idea of beauty. And as the thread title says, it’s cool to imagine an America where it never ended. Or where it branched off into new movements.

A lot of US rail stations are works of Art Deco art.
