Putin has already designated a former Russian chess Grand Master, Gary Kasparov, a "foreign terrorist" which can carry the death penalty.
The "foreign terrorist" law applies to any person who resides in or is a citizen of another country and who criticizes the Russian government but is most often applied to ethnic Russians or former Russian citizens.
Kasparov fled Russia (he now lives in Croatia) years ago and went into self-imposed exile fearing for his life. He has been a frequent vocal critic of Putin about many issues including the war in Ukraine.
Being a world class chess champion does not protect Kasporov from being hunted and prosecuted by the Russian government.
All I was asking in my first post in this thread was if it's plausible that the same thing might have happened to Naroditsky if the young man is of Russian ancestry and he has criticized Putin.

As far as I know he never made any public statements regarding the conflict. He kept his content about chess and rarely took it far off topic, occasionally he'd discuss sports teams but even that was infrequent. He never got political on his channels.
His is ethnic Russian if that answers your question. However I think it's far more likely to do with Kramnik's (one of his idols growing up) harassment over the years than anything to do with Putin or the conflict. That and no one really having his back (other than Hikaru).
One thing I will say is that being ethnic Russian may have a play in it, though not related to the Ukraine conflict. Kramnik being a former world chess champ still holds a lot of weight among the top Russian players, and Danya does consider himself somewhat part of that community even if he's American and always represented the US internationally. So when it's Kramnik spreading these accusations and a lot of other Russian players taking Kramnik's side, or if they aren't agreeing with him they still aren't challenging Kramnik's allegations, he felt like a lot of people he was friends with and respected collectively turned their back on him.
It's kind of a lesson of never meet your heroes.

I just watched the last 30 minutes of his final stream and it’s pretty wild. It’s clear as day at some point in the stream, drugs kick in and his demeanor changes. Other GMs are aborting their games against him because he isn’t lucid, then his friend comes into the room at the end of it and tells him he can keep playing chess but has to end the stream, literally saying he will unplug it if Danya doesn’t stop.

Police suspect either suicide or accidental overdose.

Tragic. Kramnik is a douchebag. Tons of GMs have called him out since the news broke and he's still tweeting, essentially, "damn he shouldn't have been a cheater and a drug addict"

Police confirmed to the Daily Mail they suspect Naroditsky may have committed suicide or accidently overdosed and are awaiting toxicology results to determine what was in his system.

Speaking exclusively with Daily Mail, his mother Elena Naroditsky shared words of heartbreak about her son's mysterious death.
She spoke of his underlying emotional struggles in dealing with repeated accusations of cheating in online games by Russian chess grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik.

There was nothing more important to Daniel than his dignity and his name as a chess player,' Naroditsky's mother told Daily Mail in an interview Tuesday night from her home in California.
'And the ex-world champion was trying to say he's a cheater.
'Daniel tried to defend himself so much,' she continued. 'The whole world was on Daniel's side. He played more and did more and more because he was trying to prove that he's not what he was accused of.'
