they're expecting welfare in their "retirement" years

these people assume they'll have a paid off house, car, and free medical care. all they'll need is that SS check to keep on going. it's stupid but it's what they believe

remove the socialist safety net and people will magically start saving again (b/c they have to) and spending less on frivolous shite

thank socialism (Social Security) for creating this incentive
I don't think I agree with you here. The vast majority of people would be just as financially irresponsible w/o SS.

Or at least come retirement time, they will be coming out with less $ than they would if they had SS.

I highly doubt it. They'll be just as stupid with their money in general. Some may, but most don't think beyond their next paycheck.

So 125 extra days of work. How little were they working before???

It's about an extra 19 hours per week. If they're making less than $18,000, it's unlikely most are at 40 hours to begin with. And even if we incorrectly assume they're all at 40 hours, you may want to consider busting your arse for 60 hours per week so you can make more than $20k annually.

But it is definitely a widely held belief that it is a very attainable goal.

It is attainable for those who put in the work.

I sense snowflakes in this thread.

As my earlier post said, I'm living proof that it can be done.

It isn't easy so most will say "it isn't attainable". Want to know why? Because most are willing to do the work it takes.

ETA: just because it isn't easy or handed to you, doesn't mean that it can't be done.

How bad do you want it?

Dude we are taught since day 1 that if you work hard, go to school, etc you'll be wealthy/successful regardless of where you started.

1. Who is teaching us that?

2. Who is working their arse off in school and after school and is still not successful? What % of people?

3. I'm guessing on #2, you're defining success solely on whether you hit that $98k number from the OP?

Not badly enough to spend my whole life busting my arse for materialistic gainz. There are much more important things in life to me.

I've busted my arse so that I can be comfortable and now have the opportunity to spend time with my wife and kids more. And I have the chance to help others when and where I choose.

What's more important than that?

I'm mid 40s, btw.

What system are you referring too? Last I checked capitalism allows the market to dictate which products and innovations succeed and fail, not central planning

I've been able to do those things since I got married. All accomplished without what I would call "busting my arse". I grew up fairly poor, too.

I'm not criticizing you for hard work, I'm just saying that different people have different priorities. Congratulations on what you've accomplished.
