I was surprised to learn that Antarctica was discovered in 1820
Antarctica is on maps from the 1500s.
The belief was there had to be a super continent there to keep the Earth in balance with all the land in the northern hemisphere. Captain Cook looked for this on the same voyage he was killed in Hawaii I think.
But it was never found.

What's interesting is that of the 6,000 residents (5,000/1,000) there are no permanent residents like the Arctic.

I took that photo while I was standing on the stairs just outside of the ship's bridge.
Most decent photographs I ever made were spur of the moment accidents.
You’ve got an eye for it apparently.

Friend of mine growing up and her husband lived there for a year or two. He was a research scientist and she was the base medical doctor. Haven't kept up with her enough over the years to get details, just know they lived there and their parents visited.

Buddy of mine works down there 6 months on and off running heavy equipment. Works with Kiwis, Aussies and Americans.
He flies in and out of New Zealand from the states. He enjoys the camaraderie but says he’s probably on his last contract as it’s monotonous and the weather wears you out.
