you could probably get a nice deal on a pre-owned Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, or possibly a $ Runner at the higher end of the price point.

didn't go through all of this, probably already mentioned, but KIA

Got a 2016 Mazda CX-5 AWD brand new for right under $25k out the door in April ‘17. It was the last ‘16 on the lot so they cut us a deal.

Put 60k on it and other than when some jackleg ran me into a curb and screwed up the front end to the tune of $1500 I’ve had no problems. The stereo/nav system is a little crude compared to others but I drove a 2020 model while mine was in the shop following the aforementioned incident and they have made significant improvements.

Pretty solid vehicle overall, I’m thinking of trading it in on a new CX-30 which is pretty much the same only a little smaller.

I've known a few people with grand cherokee's over the years. They have all had major engine or transmission issues well before they should have.

Now you know someone with a different experience with a Grand Cherokee:

Bought a '14 model GC new in January '14
Put ~245k on it until Sept. of '20
Repairs: Replaced two Coil Packs (#4 & #6 cyl.) and both headlamp bulbs.

Tires, brakes, etc obviously as needed

Went 8k - 9k miles between Oil Changes, it used no oil in between changes.

That's it. Nothing else.

In 5-10 years the Mazda’s will be looked at similar to Toyotas as far as dependability. We got a CX-5 that my wife drives and love it. Wish it was a little bigger, but no real complaints, its fun to drive and should last a long time.

The new ones they came out with in 2012 are so are very good rigs. It’s an old Mercedes chassis. The V6 Pentastar motor is excellent too.

I think the Grand Cherokee has a bad reputation from the previous models. The ones that have been around the last 6-7 years have been very solid.

We’ll see. Their big issues in the past were with transmissions and electrical issues. I don’t think they were on par with Nissan or the American companies, much less Honda or Toyota.

The CX-7 was a model the CX-5 replaced. The 7 was really problematic. The 5 is much better and seems to appeal to a much wider audience. Much better styling too.

Where I think Mazda is making progress is their move upmarket. The next gen Mazda6 will have rear wheel drive and a straight six. So will the next gen CX-9.

Good to know, I don’t know much at all about the Jeep except their windshields which are the easiest to replace

I bought my son a used FJ Cruiser. Someone told me that it would cost $1K to replace the windshield. Is that accurate?

FYI...It is a 2010 FJ Cruiser and it had 108K miles when we bought it two years ago. Paid $14K. No problems so far.

2015 Honda Pilot with as few miles as allows for that price range.

This. My wife has a 2015 Honda Pilot. She works from home so only 40,000 miles on it in over 5 years. Paid off at the end of last year. We did have a $1200 repair to the AC but luckily I purchased the extended warranty and the repair was covered. Other than that the Pilot has been a solid vehicle.
