Y’all are hating on fine dining because you’re confused by the arrangement of utensils set before you.

There's a fine line between "this tastes good" and being one of those insufferable people that Ralph Fiennes turned into human smores at the end of the The Menu.

I guess I'm team Fiennes on this one.

I know I am in the minority with this, but I can't stand fancy resturants. Drinks are expenive, the food takes forever, and the portions are usually small.

One poster said he likes it for the quiet environment. Ok I can get on board with that.

There's not much of a gap in a high-end steak house vs a mid-tier steakhouse, though. Spent $100 on a dry-aged steak last night that was not any better than a mid-tier steakhouse steak that costs $50. Even my wife said the same about her meal.

Me. I've changed since turning 40 a few years ago. I'm not in the mood for food covered in butter, cream, oils. Not to mention it tears my crappy stomach up and makes me stain my shorts. Much rather cook at home with limited amounts of shite restaurants use.

There is quite a difference between the service at a high end restaurant and what you get everywhere else.

I figured a man like yourself would appreciate people who take care and pride in their craft and their job.

Depends, a hibachi grill is amazing GOOD German food is a must and hard to find, but I never trust most steak places after my dads grill.

Sure. But I'm one hell of a cook myself, and never been very impressed with "fine dining." I learned to cook all the stuff I enjoyed there, and where to source the product.

Its truly amazing how many people get butthurt because someone doesnt share their favorite activity.

The food isnt the extent of it. When each person at your table has their own food runner, and plates are presented to each guest in absolute unison. When the chef explains every detail about the dish with a noticeable passion and expertise, when there is nothing that is forgotten, down to random complimentary bites and treats, it's not the same as your backyard or even Ruth's Chris.

Weren't you in the hospitality industry? All of this should be right up your alley.

'll preface my comment by saying I've also grown weary of fine dining the older I've become.
This is sort of true for me too. I used to plan trips around restaurants and have had the good fortune to eat at great restaurants all over the world (I used to travel a lot for business). Two things have killed my affinity for high end dining. The first was Covid. A big part of the appeal for me was the experience: being in a beautiful room, professional servers, being taken care of, blah blah blah. That was gone for several years in places like NYC and I'm not sure it's fully recovered. I think a lot of restaurants got into bad habits during the pandemic and they've stuck with those policies to the detriment of the experience. The second is that I live in a place that really just doesn't have any places worth going out to. I've just gotten out of the habit of going out to dinner, or looking forward to it or anything like that. I've had so many mediocre experiences in the last eight years that I've just given up on local dining (I live near Baltimore). When I have managed to get to NYC in recent years, I've found the prices at places I used to frequent to be just eye popping. I know, it's NYC, etc, but shite is just way out of hand and I don't value it like I used to.

I think the amount of reverse snobbery in this thread is hilarious. I don't really give a shite how other people want to spend their money. If you like diners, I like diners too. If you only want to eat at Michelin starred places, that's fine too, I don't really care if that's your thing. But a whole lot of people ITT seem deeply offended by people having different preferences than they do. And it seems like a lot of people don't know the definition of the word pretentious.

I love a good steakhouse. Artsy fine dining not so much. I do like being introduced to new flavors
