Got a cousin who just had a liver transplant. Got on the list and got his liver fairly quickly. He is about your age and seems to be doing fine. We communicate but I haven't seen him since the transplant so can't give you a good idea if he's just not complaining and his sisters are not saying anything negative, both would be in character for them in general (he doesn't complain and they are generally positive). I will say that they were pretty open about everything when he was going through it though, asking for prayer and giving details so that makes me think he is actually doing great.
Once the doctors determined he was a critical case, things happened very fast, these lists tend to be need based in terms of where you get placed.
One of my wife's really good friends just had a similar situation with a heart transplant. the elevated her need status and she got a heart within days. They elevated her the week before Easter and she had a heart transplant the wee hours of the morning on Good Friday at Oschners. All that to say that timing can play an issue on getting any organ. When they upgraded her before Easter they stated that a heart was likely over the weekend because it was a holiday weekend. It's seems tragic when you think about it at first but when you consider the tragedy would have happened anyway, at least some good comes out of it.
Good luck man.

anyone know about what their MELD scores were?
Not sure, I will try to find out but I know he was at a point where they were concerned about his liver completely failing. Extremely bad cirrhosis but it was like the bottom suddenly dropped out so it was something needed to happen quick and it did.

Brother had a liver transplant around 2004. Was in his thirties at the time. Had it done in Oschner in New Orleans, which I understand is one of the premier liver transplant centers in the nation. He pretty much gets along now as if nothing ever happened for the most part.

How did you know something was wrong with your liver? I've always wondered how people with liver, kidney lung etc problems find out. Pain somewhere? Blood work? This always freaks me out because I don't want to be one of those guys who ignores something then its to late.
Good luck to you.
Good luck to you.

My grandmother did. Had to go to Oklahoma City at the time to have the transplant.

During my residency, I spent several months on the transplant surgery team.
Some operations and recoveries go extremely well. Others don't work at all. A great deal of that has to do with how well the donor and recipient match and the patients other comorbidies/pre-transplant functional status.
The best advice I can give you is to look consider moving to Houston. At least when I was training, patients on the transplant list in Texas, especially Houston, had the best probability in the US of receiving an organ due to a combination of the surrounding metro populations and the number of transplant teams in the vicinity.
Now, that could have changed since it's been several years. But I doubt it given the continued growth of Houston and Dallas.
If you have the means to make it happen, it's definitely worth looking into.
Godspeed brother

Seems ashame to get cirrhosis that way.
For real.
If I get cirrhosis at least I want to earn it.

Average MELD for transplant at oschner is 23-26. Houston is 29-31. Per the wife.

a friend of my family had one in new Orleans about 12 or 15 years ago and has done great ever since...of course, he made some major lifestyle changes along the way.
keep your head up, as when you least expect it, you will get the call...and the minute you get that call, it is "game on"....

I work at Ochsner and am on a team of people who takes care of liver transplant patients in the OR. I have to say, Ochsner has a team in my place that contributes to their success. Not just the surgeons, but nurses, nps, social workers, etc. let me know if I can help or answer any questions for you.

Don't you know someone compatible? I'm pretty sure they can use living donors now.

My neighbor went through it just recently due to damage from Hep C. He seems healthy as a horse as far as I can tell but I'm positive he will forever be taking a significant regimen of medications. I also know he has to strictly watch his salt intake and can't ever drink. He comes by the house damn near everyday so if you want, I can ask him anything or arrange a way for you to contact, just let me know, dude will talk your ear off...
