This simpleton probably think she would be better paying $75 per month every month in perpetuity than to have ups and downs with a 100 year storm.
Wait... that doesn’t sound half bad

Or uninformed consumers at its finest.
Whichever suits your particular agenda.

The amped-up wattage costs have affected Griddy customers in particular because of the company’s distinctive business model. In Texas’ hypercharged market for electricity, Griddy makes money by debiting its subscribers a flat $9.99 monthly fee—and then selling them raw power at its going wholesale value, effectively stripping out any insulation between consumers and the oscillations in supply and demand.
Well that’s fricking dumb as hell to sign up for a provider who bills like that.

But looking at the projected rates last Thurs and Fri and how long the weather was going to last, I knew I had to jump ship to a fixed rate.

Do you have to agree to a contract period when you go fixed rate? Otherwise it seems like folks would just jump back and forth depending on the season.

Yes you have to sign up for a term to receive a fixed rate. Some are just a few months, some are multiple years. I signed up for a multi year term last year. I’ve got more important shite going on in my life than to be messing with electricity plans all the time.
The worry for me is that once your term plan ends, you automatically go month to month at market rates. So if you forget to renew and some crazy weather event hits you could get screwed. I suspect a lot of people are going to be in for a big surprise when their Feb bill hits.

I joined Bulb Energy, which is month-to-month with no contracts as well.
Some people play that game and hop around and get the new signup bonuses or introductory rates.

I passed on Griddy a couple of years ago because of the variable rates vs. a fixed contract rate (the contract rate was much lower at the time anyway). It was some cool tech to be honest.
If I'm a consumer, I'm sorry I'm just not paying the bill. I think Griddy takes a catastrophic hit here requiring Govt. protection or bailout.

Oh good to know that it’s capped. Paying double isn’t as scary as paying 100x

My dad who has Griddy went from paying .02 per kW to $8 per kW
Needless to say, he found another provider.
How I can’t find anyone that will allow me to switch before Saturday
But I also can’t complain yet I have managed to keep my usage way down since most everything in my house is gas. I have only gone up $40 since Saturday but I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed I can keep this up

Same here. But the earliest another provider will start my service is Monday. But at least me power has been off this whole time, so I guess I've got that going for me.

Give me a fricking break. Every time a company fails because of a "force majeure", tax payers are on the hook?
You fricking loons love some bail outs.

I know mine has been double the last 2 months because I’ve had the heater toasty all day. I don’t remember if I have a Flex plan or not. I’ll have to check. I guess it doesn’t really matter at the point, I was out of electricity on Monday and Tiuesday, but Sunday may have fricked me. I know for a fact I’m not on Griffey. 4Change is who i use. I had no idea coming from LA in August.

I don’t feel sorry about her. At all.
Your provider sends you a message to get off their service immediately for your own good and you drag your feet on switching?
Texas makes it extraordinary easy to price shop. She could have been under contract inside of a half hour.

The 43-year-old owner of an organic skincare and apothecary shop was initially confused by the message from Griddy, which sells wholesale power for a monthly membership, but she began to look for other providers.
Then she checked her bill.
“I paid $450 for one day. I was in shock,” Scott-Amos told The Daily Beast on Wednesday. “It made no sense because we have a gas heater, a gas fireplace, and we have been keeping the temperature around the house at 65 degrees. With that amount of money, and the labeled amount of usage Griddy said was used—we would have to be lighting up the whole neighborhood.”
The nightmare only got worse on Monday, when she realized her bill had increased by another $2,500. In comparison, Scott-Amos paid $33.93 last year for the entire month of February.
Impossibruh. I was told only ERCOT paid these spot rates.

My provider has a two day lag but for Sunday and Monday, it’s $9.55. Didn’t lose power at any point. Curious to see Tuesday and Wednesday‘s numbers but I suspect it won’t be anywhere near the Griddy numbers.
