No more wrestling, no more circuses, no more balls.

Back in the ‘60s my parents would take my sister and me to the Shrine Circus every year.
Seems like I went to a concert there in the mid seventies or there abouts.

I’ll be honest this kills the mysticism for me (not that that matters ). But I always found it interesting that you had rex as this very public organization and then comus was some mystic secret krewe that I can barely find any information on that was totally separate.

Also is Zulu the only one that has a clubhouse where people hang out throughout the year or do these other krewes actually do anything together more than just host a parade and ball?

You cannot buy your way in though you can have a lot of money and marry someone with a lineage and be a member.

Out of state debutantes usually have moms from old New Orleans families who married up financially, or their family owns businesses in other states so live there.

The municipal auditorium

What a freekin shame that the city has allowed this edifice to deteriorate like everything else in that shitehole.
There were some great rock concerts at the Municipal back in the day.
Jethro Tull, KISS and Queen on Halloween just to name a few...

Im fascinated by old traditions. Its why I love the whole Rex and Comus thing.

Makes me think of the order of Cincinnatus (think Sons of the revolution but for officers in the Continental Army who served under Washington). For the longest time, membership was limited to direct father son lineage. Then as membership dropped they started loosening the rules a bit.

I wonder if there is a mechanism like that in place for these folks. There can only be so many blue bloods running around, right?

I've heard about this round table club, but don't really know too much. Found one of their old members books awhile back while looking around a friends house.

Zeus is a social aid and pleasure organization that eventually decided to put on a parade, but it's roots are as a club.

There are other krewes that do a lot of stuff during the year. Thoth has a lot of events at their den. Carrollton does a lot of stuff as well.

But I can't think of any other krewe that has a daily club. Most of the Rex/Comus/etc gang hang out at the Boston Club, etc.

Yes. I cannot fathom the effort that went in. Both in arm twisting another potential queen whose mother grandmother and grandfather were royalty out of one to the expense and planning. The dresses alone are a multiple of the cost of a high end wedding dress. And you do not get to experience the full event for either daughter.

These krewes aren't huge, and there is still plenty of blue blood kids being born to keep them going.

The Municipal Auditorium is 90 years old and like a lot of older NOLA city-owned properties, had a lot of issues before it was hit hard by flooding during Katrina.

It has a very interesting history. Some highs, such as great wrestling and prize-fights. Some lows, like the hurricane, and the 6 months it was a casino. And then you had the Brass hockey team playing there before the Arena was built. The opposing team had to walk through the crowd to get to their locker room. Good times!

I am far from jealous of them. My wife's family lost its place in Comus when her great grandmother died and then the Great Depression took all the money because her husband had speculated on the margin so had to sell lots CBD property to cover those margins. He did keep his position as an exec VP with Pan American, but not with big salary.
