The idea is that the most possible road is accessible at all times.
Zooming past helps the most people, though many don’t realize it.
I’m sorry it hurts your feelings, but it’s true.

Which still means I am blocking a whole open lane traffic now causing two jammed lines instead of one.
How are you blocking if you are matching the speed of the other lane?
You are so entitled you literally can’t conceive of not running full speed till you run out of road, huh.

Yea, staying in the slow lane and tailgating the car in front of you because you get pissed at the ones who are in the fast lane and merge at the merge point is definitely what they designed the zipper merge for.
You might be on to something.

No it doesn’t. Not even attempting to merge till you are already stopped thus requiring the other lane to artificially stop completely as well to create an opening for you removes the benefit of having the open lane.
You can’t use the logic and studies about zipper merging to justify something that isn’t zipper merging. Yes you want to use as much of the closed lane as possible without having to stop. So as you approach, you reduce speed to match the other lane and try to get in

Correct, but for the zipper merge to work properly, the merge has to be accomplished at the end of the blocked lane.
See animation below:
What many are suggesting in this thread is to merge well before the merge point, which leaves a whole lane not being used. Just because it hurts people’s feelings when they see someone going faster than them, and get merge in before them.
Which is how the zipper was designed.

Because they’re ignorant and scared.

But you have the god given right to sit in two lanes to block traffic?

you don't have a god given right to go all the way up the zipper and act like you are god's gift to mankind to cut off the person that's been there for 10 minutes waiting.
But I’ll grant you that interstate construction or wrecks are different than normal city driving.

I have a rule about this.
I let 1 person in at the “merge” sign.
Then at the merge point, if it happens naturally it happens. If not it’s not my problem.
Should have gotten over when the big arse sign told you to.

I’m in the big truck and I approve. Those idiots saw the same signs that I saw a mile back.

You know cake mixes were originally designed where the only addition was water. No egg, no oil, just water.
The designers forgot to factor in the human element and designed for something that doesn't exist.
Your cute little gif shows 2 seconds of cars behaving as an engineer designed them. It does not show the car coming up behind the white van that will try to go all the way and get in front of the white van.

No traffic is being blocked jackass. It’s called merging very slowly while in standing traffic

There's a difference between an on-ramp/off-ramp zipper merge and one that is for a stretch of freeway that just goes from 4 lanes to 3 or 3 to 2.

Who has the right of way?
If you wait to merge until the last second, you are ignoring your obligation to merge safely. Waiting until the last second forces the issue but is very dangerous.
Not being an a-hole usually leads better outcomes.
