We got what we wanted. Don't care.

There are several Toyota Grand Highlanders in South LA. Why don’t you just go buy one?

Is this the future of buying cars? Seems pretty simple. Dealerships don’t need to maintain massive inventory.
The future is direct to consumer sales. Which is pretty much exactly what you did but you gotta pay that middleman stealership to make sure the couches in the waiting room are comfy and the F&I guy can makes his child support payments.

Well if it’s by design, they lost my business. Was looking at several vehicles and we liked the Grand Highlander but they only had one in stock and it wasn’t what we wanted. We went across the street and bought a vehicle.
We wound up with a Subaru ascent for almost the same reason.
Subaru gave us exactly what we wanted. Toyota not being able to order exactly what you wanted is ridiculous

Solved that because I bought my first truck on the top deck of a car hauler that pulled in the lot while I dealing with salesman. Bought my first Toyota the same way two years ago. $500 down with the option to remove my offer. Walked down the street and ate breakfast as they unloaded and cleaned the car. Took the car home.

It's really not a new concept but rather a larger shift in the process.
My first new purchase was in 1999 when I built a Chevy Suburban. I put down money and waited until it was finished to take delivery. No hassle. No negotiation. Simple. I spoke with one agent, out of state, and he took the order. I took delivery in another state.

Why get a grand Highlander? Better options out there

Which version you get?
Limited AWD. Toyed with the idea of the hybrid but decided to go with this one because it had everything I wanted and was in the pipeline.

The demo and wait will work until one dealership decides to stock vehicles. People will drive a few hours or more to get a vehicle rather than wait 3 months.

Go look at the Lexus equivalent TX
At least where I am in Los Angeles, there’s a ton of them on dealer lots and they’re being discounted 5-10% from msrp.
With the GH going strictly at msrp the gap in price between the GH and a comparable Lexus isn’t that bad.

My parents ordered a black one a couple of months ago and it came in this week. It's super nice.

Yeah thats how it works now for brand new (In-Demand) vehicles. Its actually pretty great either way becuase you either get what you wanted or your money back and the dealorships likely sells it same day if not shortly after.
Downside is you have practically 0 negotiating power on the price.

Had an uncle of mine drive his new car off the lot, stopped at a red light and his wife (my aunt) rear-ended him following in their current vehicle.

Nah, it’s incredible how many impulse buys are made. No inventory to “put you in this car today” and sales will drop.

The dealerships were very recently saying it was because of the chip issue, I have heard it personally several times. No other company is having that issue still. Toyota is fricking up IMO by using this tactic.
Idk about that. They are having trouble producing enough of certain models like the Sienna, but most Toyota models they have a lot of on the lot. I was just at my local dealer this week and they had a lot of cars and trucks.
