GoRuck is pricey, but you'll use that thing for 20 years, especially if you're hauling weight. Convince your parents to buy it as an "investment" and pack stuff in it for your summer in Europe.
But seriously, who brings books to class any more? 20 years ago you pretty much read (text) books at home, and came for notes and prof commentary. shite, if you're going to cover chapter 7 on Thursday, take screenshots of chapter 7, leave the book at the dorm. I carried around probably 40+ pounds of books in Junior High, and never did that again in college, or most of high school.
Not germane to the convo, but you do get that publishers use heavier paper, with gloss, and heavier covers, to emotionally inflate the value of the shite your prof forces you to buy, right? Marcus Aurelius "Meditations" is worth $100 but it weights 3oz and is five bucks.

I second this. They are top notch. I use one for work and another for travel.

Ogio makes great backpacks.

I haven't been to school in nearly 30 years but going back this fall.
Be prepared.

Dude what are you going back to school for? I can almost assure unless you are in law school I highly doubt you need the books.
I went back to school after a 10 year hiatus. Freshman year bought all the books because I thought that's how it was done still. After that first semester I realized that I learned more from google than my textbooks. Save your money, you don't need the books.

That was a weird thing about law school. You had mostly young people, then the 10% or so who were like 20 years older and decided to change careers.

Company I worked for paid $200 for a SWISS computer back pack almost 20 years ago for me to carry my computer when traveling. Never had to get another one. Backpack is well built.

So you can put all the weight on one shoulder while the bag bounces off your back the whole time? wtf
Backpacks are very much preferred and widely used.

Save your money and time by not buying that hoi poli fru fru stuff. Get one of these and you can use for work after you graduate:

I can confirm Osprey quality. My sons have them for camping and school. They have survived them for 2 years now and haven't fallen apart. That's a minor miracle.

The textbooks will be a problem depending on size but Targus makes backpacks with padded areas inside that are intended for laptops.
