We have holes backfilled with expanding foam where poles broke off then pulled out and replaced… there was no dirt to backfill in these instances. We also have transformer poles that cracked through but didn’t fall. The solution was long galvanized bolts. Waiting for them to come down any time. Many trees will die from internal wind damage.. many will fall in two years or so.

I have two canaries in the coal mine (other than Whataburger app.)
One of them: I was supposed to get a delivery from Amazon Monday. The app lets me know something is "out for delivery." Since we have the Amazon lockers, which require power, if I see that it gets delivered, I will know power is back. It's out for delivery between 4-8pm. I fully expect I'll get a delivery rescheduled message sometime during that time period.
I also use the Xfinity outage tracker. Hundreds of outages in my building (which is energized), but the next closest complex 1/4 mile away, no outages reported.
The new power tracker is a downgrade from what we used to have, for sure.

Whole house generators have become the norm. Friday I lost power for six hours resulting from a thunderstorm. Monday outage was six hours from Beryl. After Laura and Delta I purchased a trailer mounted diesel 25kw generator won on eBay. Best investment ever. Now I need an outage every now and then just for the exercise.

We’re back on now in sterling ridge, trip to hill country avoided
Is Sterling Ridge south of Woodlands Parkway. That area is covered by CenterPoint unlike most of town which is Entergy.

What is left of Barrel is producing another mess of supercells and tornado warnings, this time up in New York. They had one confirmed earlier in SW NY.

This is an interesting tweet that’s worth reading, especially for those posters in the Houston area. Mark has been studying and chasing tropical systems for a long time. He’s seen a lot and has been at ground zero for some of the worst hurricanes of the last 25 years.

Yeah Legend, there is a large area of discrete cells that are all trying to hook. Confirmed tornado far SW of Buffalo around Darien and then Batavia east of Buffalo.

Nah, but a pretty prolific tornado producer.

Here’s a nice little gif of the NHC forecast cone images over the few days between when Beryl passed through the Windward Islands and when it made landfall in Texas. Useful for looking at how the projected path changed overtime as the models fluctuated.

Abbott is a joke.

Houstonians had plenty of time to prepare. They were in the cone Thursday night

I don’t think being prepared or not is the question. If you have lived on the Gulf Coast for very long you should know that hurricanes are a moving target regarding landfall. I think what is catching people off guard is not having power for such an extended period of time even though they have generators along with food and water. They got their 3 or 4 cans of gas like they were supposed to do but come Day 4 they ran out because they ran those frickers 24/7. Now it is a crisis trying to find gas.

Most of us were prepared.. I have my generators going.. fans blowing.. generators working and just picked up another 12 gallons of gas..
The point is over two million with no power on a hurricane that was a tropical storm until cat one.. I have been in this same house with cat 5 coming at me and eventually going directly over me.. rode them out with a fully boarded up house..(was not cat 5 when hit here)
Point is ..CenterPoint and others are not putting in the money for prevention..
just had the spokesman on. Idiot was running analogies around all over like energy is the new car model and need to think about prevention like when they started seatbelts..
We all know.. politics… money… favors..

Honest question: how does center point or any entergy company “prevent” this? Do you mean just by better planning for restoration prior to a storm?
Posted on 7/10/24 at 2:22 pm to Thecoz
If the grid was improved to the point that storm related power failures were eliminated, we couldn’t pay for the service. If you’re burning gas to run a fan in the daytime, you’re doing it wrong.
