I've had $5 (for a whole bag) Walmart socks that have lasted ten years or more. But a $20 pair of Smartwool can't make it 2 without holes popping up everywhere.

Have a couple pairs of those and several pairs of stance. Both are good. It’s amazing how much better you feel after a day on your feet if you’re wearing decent socks.

For Dress: Stance

For athletic: I use a New Balance sock they just discontinued. luckily I've got 14 pair of them.
