Nearly purchased the Zulu Time a few months back. The black dial is beautiful in person.

I purchased a wrist watch from Walmart for $29. It looks and works great.

look up 'ghost factories'. there have been instances where the factories that produce the real watches had workers coming in after-hours creating unauthorized copies using the same materials and process.
The luxury knock off market out of China right now is crazy. Some of the stuff isn’t “cheap” per se but you can pay $300 for a Rolex knockoff that is essentially indistinguishable from the $10k version. Even things like designer bags are really good fakes, which says more about the quality of low end luxury items than anything.

Or you can pay thousands more for a pretentious status symbol that does zero more than a $30.00 timex will.
Do you have any artwork in your house? If so, why? Just buy a $3 poster at Spencer's and thumbtack it to the wall.

I have a Rolex Sub and a Longines Hydroconquest. Longines is one of the first Swiss watchmakers and has always had a great reputation for quality. I probably wear the Hydro more than I wear the Sub. The Hydro actually keeps better time too.

i wouldn't buy 99% of most luxury crap out there because there's a damn good chance its coming out of a chinese factory already.
you have to trust the brand; and that's why rolex jealously guards every aspect of watch creation because if it got out they were lying it would kill the brand; noboy would ever trust a rolex again.
as for all the designer bags & shite; there are so many out there and i guarantee without vetting a majority of them are producing this shite overseas.
luis vuittion makes a glorified canvas backpack they sell for $15k for chrissake
at least with a rolex you're getting an engineering marvel with very exacting specs for the movement and complications.
my holy grail would be that IWC perpetual that should run for like 500 years without missing a single moon phase or leap year but you gotta have deep pockets to (A) purchase one and (B) keep that finnicky movement serviced.
but there's something about a mechanical timepiece that can correctly navigate the moon and dates for 100s of years with one set that is appealing...

One thing I appreciate about my wife is she loves expensive things, but doesn’t care about labels. So I know if/when she purchases a bag it’s at least quality leather and well made.

Saw a TikTok on those the other day and was absolutely mind blown.

Alright, so a perpetual calendar that is roughly $75,000.
Unlike Obtuse, I'm a big calendar guy. I collect vintage and neovintage perpetual and complete calendars. Personally, I find that the costs of ownership are overblown. As long as you follow the instructions, they are reliable enough.
If you are OK with a shaped watch, the Patek 5040 is a great place to start. I like the tonneau shape but I understand that it is divisive. The 5040 was offered alongside the 3940, which has exploded over the last year. The 5040 has the 240 movement and has nice Breguet numerals. It's a lovely watch.
You might be able to buy a 3940J for $75,000 or under, but that is a tough buy nowadays. Personally, I believe that the 3940 is among the most beautiful perpetual calendars ever - I own a 3rd series 3940P and an early 2nd series 3941J w/ Dore dial. If you are willing to sacrifice condition - which will have an impact on the watch being an "investment" - you could probably get a lightly polished late 2nd, or 3rd series 3940J. One sold the other day at Wind Vintage for $69k that looked a little rough - at a minimum, the hallmarks were gone.
Personally, I think the best buy in PC land - aside from maybe the 5040 - is neovintage VC, which has lagged behind AP for some reason. I really, really like the VC 43031 in platinum with the "vieux paniere" guilloche dial. You can buy one in strong condition for right around $40k.
You could also get the Patek 5140. That is squarely within your price range. Personally, I'm not a big 5140 guy. Hard to get excited about the 5140 given what came before it.

i absolutely love the amount of watch fans TD has
really enjoy reading posts from people who obviously have a love for mechanical timepieces; never ceases to amaze me.

I love that watch. Too expensive to ever buy one, though.
Definitely beautiful, especially in the blue....
A tad pricey though.....

Did I ever tell you that I picked up a vintage Omega Ploprof?
Yes, and you shared pics of the magnificent beast! It is a labor of love to find such a good example of an old war horse.
I have a tangential acquisition. A while back when I was trolling AliX for watch parts for a build or mod I probably never finished (I have an entire Craftsman top chest filled with Chinesium parts and movements for projects that interested me for a moment in time) I ran across a homage I had to buy. It is a fairly faithful homage to the Omega Seamaster 1000 prototype with the 1310 Megaquartz movement from the 70s. A homage to a 1970s one off prototype is one I can get behind. I'll post a picture of it when I get home this evening.

I'm a fan of both of those pieces and I have come dangerously close to buying the new Breitling Superocean Heritage. Breitling rolled out their new calibre B31 and they're making great watches at reasonable sizes with it. The integrated mesh bracelet is really well done. Longines makes great watches at a really good price point.
